These were sold as a factory reconditioned. I received mine today in an Amazon renewed box which IMO is a lower grade than a factory reconditioned. They look like a customer return to me and not a typical factory refurbished item [quote=“wootbot, post:1, topic:2218735, full:true”]

Not sure if I should return them. The set I received looked like a customer return and used! Amazon renewed is not factory reconditioned! Factory renewed/ refurbished are usually by the manufacturer and item is brought to manufacturer specs and good as new! I’ve read quite a few poor reviews on Amazon renewed items. Quite a few are usually customer returns that Amazon usually just looks at, throws back in the box and sends out as renewed. I don’t want to have issues with this 6 months from now and not be able to return the item!
I’ve anecdotally noticed a few items listed here as Refurbished or Factory Refurbished that when received are instead labeled as Used followed by a condition: Pristine, Very Good, Good, Acceptable.
As you described, this can be very different from what one traditionally expects from items that have truly been subjected to a thorough inspection, cleaning, repairing if needed, testing, certification and repackaging (May be non-retail) process. Especially when items are marketed as Factory Reconditioned. In many other instances (Ebay, Facebook Marketplace, etc ), Used can simply mean that an item has a prior history of ownership with no implied refurbishment or qualification process beyond a general description of its cosmetic and or operational conditions. Hence, the confusion when a supposedly refurbished item is labeled as used.
Personally, regardless of their possible similarity, the mere fact that an offering lists one condition and the actual item is labeled with another condition upon receipt is enough to cause me to wonder if I have received what was offered and what I thought that I was purchasing. Knowing that I may return an item if its condition does not meet my expectations definitely adds a level of comfort, but the uncertainty still remains.
My item was not repackaged, and was put in an Amazon box. No stickers, labels or any other indication that this was a factory refurbished item. Factory refurbished would at least have inspections stickers on it along with some sort of wrapping. This was a used item that they wiped down, put in the Beats case and sent out as factory renewed. I generally stay away from Amazon renewed due to their poor history with renewed items.
Truly Factory Reconditioned items from multiple sources often come packaged in non-retail (Brown Box) packaging, but are usually clearly labeled as such, so I personally would not be as concerned about it arriving in a non-retail box as I would be about who actually did the refurbishing and whether it was truly the original manufacturer or a certified partner. Unfortunately, in this instance we don’t know, so one must put one’s faith in Amazon.
