Nintendo DSi & DSi XL Gaming Systems Price: $69.99 - 79.99 Shipping Options:: $5 Standard OR $10 Two-Day OR $20 One-Day Shipping Estimates: Ships in 1-2 business days (Friday, Oct 31 to Monday, Nov 03) + transit Condition: Refurbished
While this is definitely a great system, you may want to hold off. Nintendo has already announced the next version of the 3DS, so we could see a 3DS price drop or at least some deals somewhat soon. A 2DS can already be had for 100 dollars occasionally. (And the 3DS/2DS are of course backwards compatible with original DS games.)
EDIT: An additional note: I always enjoyed the DS lite more due to the fact that it had a GBA game port. Just my 2 cents.
My son picked up the 2DS for $100 on Nintendo’s website (sale, I think) a month or so ago. I’m a little leery of not having the screen protected by a cover, but he likes it a lot.
I have both DSi and DS Lite. I like the extra games you could download on the DSi and the GBA games on the DS Lite, so I needed both!
I purchased a refurbished DS many years ago (from Nintendo store). The problem with buying a refurbished Nintendo DS is that the reason it was returned is because it was dropped repeatedly. It did not work out of the box.
I remember when there were the “must have” Christmas gifts for my kids. I almost choked at the $150 price tag. Today - what I would do to go back to when what they wanted only cost that much.
If you don’t know anything about game systems and are wondering if your kid/grandkid/etc. would love this for Christmas, bear in mind that the majority of newer games are for 3DS, which is incompatible with these. If you need a cheap alternative, the 2Ds is compatible, and not too expensive. If the kid is young enough not to need the cooler games, then these are ok. They even have a web browser and a camera with fun distortion features that my son loved until he needed the newest Pokemon game, which didn’t work on DSi.

You can throw a screen protector on top. I have one on my 3DS and I’m glad for those high stylus use titles. Far as I know he should be better off as the hinge on the other systems is even more dangerous.
Not directed at you, but I don’t want to make multiple posts…
As others have said already, not worth it due to it being 3 systems behind on the curve. There’s a 3DS, 2DS, and soon a New 3DS. At this point there’s no new software for the DSi. A 2DS would be a much better option, giving you new titles.
The other people in this thread are being a bit generous about these systems. If you are buying this for a child, they will most likely be disappointed. You can get the 3ds (the one they actually want) for $30 more refurbished through Nintendo’s online store.
This is the DSi, not the 3DS (or the “New” 3DS just released in Japan), so in other words you’re looking at a two-generations-behind system that publishers stopped making games for over a year ago.
You can get these for less on eBay. Would recommend just getting a 3DS instead; they play all DSi games.
I agree with the other posters. We have a 3DS XL. I sold my DS years ago to put toward this handheld. The system being sold is pretty out of date because the 3DS launched in February of 2011 making the DSi the old handheld close to 4 years ago.
If you want a refurb DSi, they’re $10 cheaper if you go to your nearest gamestop, you have to use the “Check Availability” link on these pages to find which store near you would have them.
These also don’t play GBA or 3DS games or DS games that use the GBA slot for accessories (Guitar Hero).
That said, GameStop is basically liquidating their stock on games for it, so you can get okay games like tetris, meteos, etc pretty cheap, and there’s a few mario games and zelda games that are pretty good for it, but will cost a little more.
I would avoid the DSi & DSi XL. They no longer have Nintendo’s Wi-Fi Connection Service, which was discontinued in May 2014. This console is no longer supported by Nintendo as well.
Just wait until the next version of the 3DS comes out, and buy one of the hundreds of current 3DS that will go on Ebay when it’s released.
If your kids are like mine, and have learned to appreciate what was once great when it can be had cheap or free (original Nintendo & 64, PlayStation 2, etc.), this might be nice. There are oodles of games available used.

I wouldn’t expect a price drop on the 3ds just yet. Nintendo north america is refusing to bring the new 3ds to the US until sometime in 2015. They already produced this years old 3ds bundles and want to sell those for xmas at that nice 189.99 price point.

Actually I managed to get my Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds 3DS XL special edition bundle (which came with the 40 dollar game) for $150 last Black Friday. I would imagine similar if not better deals this year through the 4th quarter.
