Do all T-shirt designers here hate Stargate or something, so that is why it seems to be ignored in all Derbies or do they realize that the editor never picks anything Stargate related and so they just don’t bother designing them?
It’s just one of those very niche IPs that doesn’t sell very well; so artists probably don’t bother creating designs for them. I don’t know if I can remember the last time we received a Stargate entry in the time I’ve been here!
For what it’s worth, I’ve seen one or two in the last year. I just find it hard to believe that it is more of a niche sci-fi following, when there’s been three series that’s been part of it, one of them having been on for 10 years straight, when Firefly and Serenity, as brilliant as they were, we’re on for much shorter times.
** had to go back and find the most recent one that I remembered being on here.
I can only answer for myself (as one of the people who subs to the derby)- I actually have never watched Stargate other than maybe the original movie and so I really have no idea how to get started on thinking about creating an original design. It is one of those Sci-Fi series that I would like to watch, but have never found the time to sit down and start. I am sure the editors and artists have nothing against it.
I appreciate the design shoutout! My family puts Stargate up there with the various Treks, but I agree there isn’t as much of a fanbase, especially across generations (no Trek pun intended). Good news is that there is a new Stargate series in the works with many of the original writers/showrunner. Bad news is that it is an AmznPrime series, so we have to hope they don’t damage another beloved IP with this new show. Without shilling too much, and given it is a parent company, I think it is safe to mention that this design might be available from Amzn if one were to search by that same title…
Yeah I saw that announcement too about the new Stargate series. I’m also glad it’s not a reboot. Time will tell if it’s good or not but from my understanding we still have at least a year if not two before we see the signs of it.
Just from my own perspective, Stargate was amazing, but the recognizable qualities of the IP are hard to work with from a satire/remix perspective. I’ve actually sat down to try to come up with things I could do relating to them, but gave up part way through because I didn’t see them working out.
There’s that fine line to walk between just making a Stargate shirt (that will get removed or not get printed due to IP infringement) and making a Stargate shirt that nobody will recognize as such (and thus nobody will buy). Finding the sweet spot between those two is hard to do with that specific property.
