Many years ago, one of the editors made a comment along the lines of “There comes a point in which you’ll submit a design even before the theme is posted.”
I always try to stretch the theme as far as possible to make what I think will be a good design that the buyers want even if it does not exactly fit, so I don’t think any real changes are necessary. I was more commenting on the fact that the derby theme was very specific about designs needing to focus on a breed and characteristics of the breed, but a lot of the shirts are just generic dog shirts having nothing to do with a breed or just random dogs of multiple breeds in a single design. I can understand, however, that DQing 50% of the designs might be a bit disruptive.
I have lots of designs/ideas that I have started and either have not worked or I have gotten bored with. I often finish them up when they fit a new theme so maybe it all works out.
