Dr Heater Infrared Patio Heater with Tripod

Dr Heater Infrared Patio Heater with Tripod

Can we talk about how stupid outdoor heaters are? Using electricity or propane to heat an unenclosed space seems like a very poor use of resources. I have a fire pit, and the equivalence is obvious, but I see these outdoor heaters dispatched in large numbers at restaurants. We have a fire maybe 5 times a year tops. Too cold? Dine inside. Wear clothing appropriate for the weather.

Odd question: is this compatibles with smart plugs? e.g. if you turn it on, unplug it, and plug it back in, does it remain on at its previous settings?

Turning on/off smart plugs is the equivalent of unplugging and plugging it back in.

I’m looking for a radiant garage heater I can turn on/off remotely.

I bought one of these last fall, and a huge wind knocked it over and broke the element. Are there replacement elements one can buy?

When I went through the process to check shipping it said $8.99 - one really bad review, but there are options out there

From what I can see, the answer is no. This product doesn’t appear to have a hard switch on it and having a remote with timer would pair oddly with a manual on and off switch. You can buy direct infrared heaters that get installed onto your wall/ceiling for cheaper then this one, the tip over safeties that are built into this bring the price up quite a bit.

All that being said, this isn’t a space heater. It isn’t built to heat a room up, it’s built to heat up surfaces directly via infrared light. This is great for warming people in a breezy space but does a terrible job of warming up the air in your garage. It’s also a much much higher fire hazard than traditional oil radiators that plug into your smart outlet just fine.

Since this is controlled by IR, your could get an IR transmitter to turn on. I would recommend using a plug to turn it off for safety reasons, then turn on the plug, wait a few seconds then send the button you want to the heater via the IR transmitter. Bear in mind the ir transmitter is probably not rated for outdoor use and may not work through a window. Search smart IR transmitter on amazon, here is the one I use - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B085Y47L4X/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
You have to be kind of tech savvy to use the IR device, but there are instruction in the reviews and questions usually.
