I think 3rd gen is better.

Iis the 4 th gen better? I’ve heard plenty say the gen 3 is superior.

I actually prefer this 3rd Gen over the 4th gen. I have lots of issues with my 4th. Including having to yell at it half the time and it cuts out a lot and just stops listening. Sound is better on the 3rd as well.

3rd is way better

Limit 1? Everyone knows that limit should always be 3 at Woot!

My gen 3 frequently forgets it is synced sometimes no audio. I usually get it back on my starting Alexa, but that doesn’t always work.

How many can i have playing the same audio source?

Why is the Echo Dot with Clock (3rd Gen) always missing from these deals.

Because peeps all updated to the clock version and traded in these so Woot can resell them.

Got 2, they make great stereo pairs. Especially if you spend the big bucks and get the subwoofer (even though that thing is finicky).

The 3rd gen Echo Dot is better than the 4th gen Echo Dot in just about every way. We own both and have compared them next to each other.

Current price for a new 4th gen Dot, a new low (is it that bad?) price, $20, new at Woot mother, Amazon… vs $10 for a 3rd gen Dot here on Woot.

Even at the same purchase price for both, we’d still buy 3rd gen every time.

  1. Their sound quality is undistinguishable from each other.
  2. The silly globular, totally fabric covered 4th gen is harder to clean.
  3. The LED status bar is stupidly buried underneath the Dot on the 4th gen vs where it belongs, on top on the 3rd gen.
  4. Although we have not noticed it, many report the 4th gen’s ability to hear and discern commands is inferior to the 3rd gen.

Related Trivia -

  • Our home is loaded with Echo devices so we keep some as backups. The 3rd gen hockey puck form factor stacks very nicely in storage, unlike the 4th gen.
  • In fairness, the 4th gen Dot has an extra feature so obscure you very rarely see it mentioned - an Ultrasonic Sensor that can be used in Alexa Routines to sense movement in the room.
  • While the wall wart power supplies of the 3rd and 4th gen are different, they share the same 15 watt power ratings and barrel connectors so are interchangeable. (For those times when you don’t wish to fish a power cord behind furniture but want to swap out Dots.)

The write-up needs to be updated. Freetime has been Kids+ for quite a while now, and it’s $4.99/month (without discounts)

Thank you, this made the decision for me to get the $10 3rd gen!

I don’t understand the chargers. I’m sure they have ro have either MICRO-USB or USB-C laying adding everywhere. The wall wart andc barrel connector suck.

It’s 12v. They probably got better quality audio with minimal cost by bumping from 5v to 12v, and it will produce less heat. But to do 12v over USB would require either QC or PD intelligence - it would have to start with 5v and change based on device capability. A plain 12v power adapter doesn’t require any intelligence, so it costs a lot less.

Now, why they have it that physically large is a different matter. 15w isn’t that much, and going from 5v to 12v lowers both the winding ratio and the generated heat, so it would seem it could be smaller rather than larger.

I believe Amazon had no choice but to abandon the Micro USB power port on the 2nd gen Echo Dot due to the higher power demands of the 3rd gen Dot. Perhaps the biggest (only?) improvement going from 2nd gen to 3rd Dot was increased loudness and improved - even if not “musical” - sound quality. Bigger amp and speakers, bigger power. Micro USB simply could not supply the power needed.

But yah, it was nice being able to power the 2nd gen Dot so universally, even making it into a less good sounding portable Tap stand-in with a USB battery bank.

A compromise might have been shifting to a USB C power supply since that could handle the power. Perhaps Amazon will fix this shortcoming on the next gen…

I thought the same but ended up buying two 4 gen Echos and pairing them in stereo. Then you really don’t need to drop the coinage on the sub. Pretty impressed, the Echo has a lot of low end surprisingly and fills up a smaller room just fine. Instant stereo system. Pick them up for $60 when they have the sales on the mothership site.
