Echo Spot - Smart Alarm Clock with Alexa (Black or White)

Absolutely THE WORST Echo device made. The one task this thing has it does not do. It is impossible to force this clock to show the time. It constantly advertises for Amazon instead. I eventually replaced it and now have it next to my shower where I have covered the screen and use it as a speaker. It is garbage.

Perhaps this may help? (multi step and not intuitive)

Turn the Display on Echo Dot with clock On or Off

  • Open the Alexa app .
  • Open Devices .
  • Select Echo & Alexa, then select your Echo Dot with clock device.
  • Select LED Display.
  • Turn Display on or off.

If you have done all this and all it does is show advertisements then condolences…You’re right.

Unfortunately, that would also mean the clock would not be displayed so ITSGREGWORLD is right.

Truly a shame since that would be so easy to fix because it is purely a software issue.

The advertising/“it can do this” has been an issue loudly complained about as well across Show devices.

Either mother Amazon isn’t listening to customers or they have a bull-headed leader somewhere who believes they know better than customers what they want.

The Spot already had detractors due to its round and small face. It didn’t need a poor software design on top of that.

Nothing like shooting yourself in the foot.

It may be version and OS dependent but ensuring these settings seemed to work for some with time on

  1. Go to the Alexa app and press the 3 lines icon at the top left corner.
  2. Go to Settings > Notifications > Things to try.
  3. Turn off “Alexa Device Notifications”.

“Rotate continuously” also should be turned off as well.

Very much agree the Spot’s small round display is limiting. That said, even with such a keyhole display Amazon may have thought people would want to be able to cycle through multiple home screen cards, such as Weather, Things To Try, Messaging, Notifications, Calendar Reminders, and more as a default.

Go to settings-home&clock-home content on the Spot screen, not the app. Turn everything off.

That will leave just the clock screen. I have two of these little guys and they’re both on clock faces all the time.

Mine displays the clock almost exclusively. I’m actually here to buy more.

They’re freaking adorable if you just want a little clock.

Good to hear from folks who’ve been able to turn off the revolving message feature and keep the clock face on.

We have just about every variant of Echo device except the Spot and 5” Show.

Can anyone comment on the sound quality compared to various other Echo devices? Does it sound better/worse/the same vs the 3rd gen Echo Dot? (The last hockey puck form factor before Amazon changed to the silly fabric-covered dust collector globe shape.)

Wirecutter and Tomsguide are respected ranking and tech site. Hope this is what you seek.

They say the Amazon Echo Studio is the best sounding smart speaker made by Amazon. But the cost is in Sonos range or even higher.

Respected by technophiles, Wirecutter says in a blurb at the bottom, “The best Alexa speaker for whole-house music,” is Sonos One."
“The Sonos One sounds great and is easy to use, and it works with both Alexa and Google Assistant, as well as with more music services than any other Wi-Fi speaker.” Bilingual is good!

Thanks, yah, I’ve well aware of those two sites and am also well-versed in the features and specs of each of the Echo devices. What I have not personally tested - the sound quality of the Spot vs 3rd gen Dot - something someone with both devices should know.

My impression is the Spot is like a 2nd Gen Dot in speaker size and sound, but with a cute view screen.

The 3rd gen Dot is consider to have a significantly larger speaker, deeper base and overall better sound quality (one review said 70% louder but did not comment about distortion at max loudness) than the 1st two dots in the reviews I have previously read (which was then why I added a 3rd).

You perhaps you can give a review of relative frequency range without distortion. That seems missing from most reviews.

I ordered a black one. Got a white one that has two labels on the box- black and white. Amazon person had a 50/50 chance and got unlucky.

Woot offered me a partial refund which was really cool. But turns out the charger is the wrong size and these guys don’t run off of micro USB.

So it needs to go back and I can’t buy another one.

END OF RANT.

Someone ping me when they go on sale again please.

EDIT: Just got an email that they’re sending me a new one. WOOT CUSTOMER SERVICE IS THE BEST.

Yes they are.

If they are, it seems thanks to you, @ThunderThighs - most of the time. At least it seems that way from the issues raised and your intervention.

So, much thanks from your Woot loyalists.

This must be a refurbished one. After the use of several month, the screen start flickering and it persists all the time. At least it’s still visible for a moment.
