Egana National Geographic Watch

I saw these last time they were up for $10 more and the NG06GKBS was sold out by the time I got serious. I had to pounce quickly to get the NG06GKBS Pharaoh this time. I hope it turns out to be a nice watch.

So yes, there were some available to begin with, but as is often the case with woot, there’s only a few of the popular ones and they go quickly =(

Damn. I kinda figured that was the case - I was the same way last time and I didn’t get it in time. Oh well. Congrats to those who managed to snag one.

in for one for my dad for father’s day, unless the watch is awesome and i decide to keep it… i got the slide rule one with the solar cell since i #1 suck at math #2 like the idea of charging in the sun…

so who knows how to work the slide rule?

Fathers day is a good idea. My pa doesn’t really wear watches though…

http://wootblogfiles.s3.amazonaws.com/NG770BNG771BManual.pdf Here is the owners manual for the watch, it shows how to use the slide dial.

The thermometer stinks, It only tells the temperature after 15 minutes of not wearing it. In otherwords, if you want to know the temperature you have to take off the watch and wait 15 minutes. I have not tested altitude/pressure readings, but it seems dubious since they measure the same thing and supposedly can tell the difference. Also, this watch is HUGE! I thought it was going to be just like any other watch (which fit me fine) but only the incredible hulk could wear it.

I got one too. Gotta love automatic watches!

Awwww, again the NG06GKBS already sold out before I could get one!

In for 1 altimeter watch, I am an avid hiker/rock climber.

Ordered a 752 in both Stainless Steel and Leather. I’ll take one for myself and use the other as a Father’s Day gift. I’ll let him choose.

Actually that catch about the thermometer gives the watch more credibility in my eyes, which is good, 'cause I went ahead and bought one right before I read your comment. But I guess I’m gonna need to work out my forearms if that thing’s gonna look good on me, eh?

Hmmm… This looks familiar (formerly on Woot! for $50).

… uggh… I wanted to buy 3 more NG06’s as gifts and to collect. They are really great watches. Had mine sized at a watch repair place and the person complimented on how good the watch was.
the movement is japan made, by orient, and what they did not mention last time, have not checked if it was mentioned this time, is that there is a clear display case on the back of the watch that allows one to see the movement.

even though I paid $10 more, it was very much worth it. furthermore, the lack of electronics means there is less that might go wrong with the watch.

discussion thread from the time they sold these watches over at woot:
http://www.woot.com/Forums/ViewPost.aspx?PostID=3040455

got the NG06GKBS last time for $55.00 and I thought it was totally worth it.

All the exceptional ones are gone, the NG06s and the NG730s. This irks me greatly. I would have gotten both. Maybe we’ll see JUST THESE TWO at a future Woot! – hint hint.

I totally don’t get some people’s obsessions with 80-year old tech. But you guys keep right on buying those, that way my quartz/radio watches won’t be sold out when I make up my mind which one. :stuck_out_tongue:

Just wish the solar aviators had radio; that’d be a no-brainer. As it is, I like the extra dials on the NG770B, and obviously the solar power, but I’m addicted to being able to count on my Casio to always be right, so I’m tempted to go with the NG770C.

I know I should probably just get both, but I know one’s gonna sit on my dresser and never get worn.

Anyone got anything to say about the 770B (or 770A) or 770C (or 770D/771D), good or bad?

Oh, never mind; I see the 770B is sold out already. Guess that’s one decision made for me.

I picked up the NG730 in white last time, sad to see that it wasn’t offered in Black.

Today I got the NG701, and two NG752s in SS, and leather. I’m keeping the NG701, and one of the NG752s. The other is going to my GF for her pops…

I really wish that I could have picked up a Pharaoh. I’ve missed it both times!

About the Hiker…
Yes, Virginia…you DO have to take off the watch to get an accurate temperature reading. Its calibrated to a 10th of a degree, and by my experience is deadon accurate.

The barometer also appears to give accurate readings - once calibrated, its measurements match those of a confirmed-reliable weather instrument.

So far as altitude - this watch rocks. It track relative and absolute…so if you were starting a hike at 500 feet above sea level (that would be the absolute part…) then your relative start elevation would be zero.

Relative would give you your elevation at any point above your relative starting point. The really cool feature is you can track both your ascent and descent…so if you went out and hiked straight 100’ up and then 100’ down, each reading would show 100’ and your net gain would be zero…

Great for keeping track of altitude, accurate enough to use on a topo map, durable and solid. True this watch is not light weight, but none of the decent altitude capable watches are…condsider this is a weather instrument you can wear on your wrist and its quite the deal!
