How far away is your nearest post office?

The UPS Store is closer.

One block away but it might as well be miles away. I’m noticing a very disappointing amount of decline in service. Too frequently my mail is completely lost or delivered to the wrong address. Before and after holidays like Labor Day, there are major mistakes and delays in delivery because the regular employees take vacation time off. Package delivery is very inconsistent and takes much to long. I’m old enough to remember when there were two home deliveries of mail daily around Christmas.
And I remember when a first class stamp costs 2 cents!
I’m always disappointed when occasionally Amazon has the post office make a delivery. What happened to the US postal service? Incompetence and indifference!

About 5 minutes for my local one & 10 minutes from the main big one in my city where there is no parking. Also have a couple of local po box type places & a ups store.

YES This ^

No home mail delivery is offered to anyone in this town. (No mail delivery persons.)

Every household gets free P.O. box and has to pick up their own mail from the post office.

Despite post office being around 1 mile - easy walking distance - I only go get my mail once every two weeks or so. I have no idea what people are getting that requires daily deliveries.

I get packages shipped to a different address because I never know who the shipping carrier will be and if it is not USPS there is no covered area for packages when I’m away.

However, Post Office hangs onto any mail/packages pretty much indefinitely until picked up; they have even called to let me know there is a package waiting!

I read that some communities without USPS mail delivery service chose that because they thought it would be good for ā€œencouraging community buildingā€. Nah, I live here because I generally don’t want to see people lol.

None are close enough to me but I have an awesome MAIL MAN.
He took a vacation day today, and I miss his accuracy.

Why do you ask, comrade?

@amshortcake This is more efficient logistics. Your preferred ā€œlocal stays localā€ method would require an additional distribution chain-- facilities, people, machines, vehicles, etc. By combining into one mechanism, the USPS is increasing its efficiency. Also, there’s no lost capacity because there is mail going both ways… mail leaving your city is being replaced by mail coming to your city… and, yes, some of those pieces are the same.

Yeah, they explained all of that when they closed our sorting branch. And I get it. It may be more efficient with regard to logistics, and money, but it doesn’t help transit time management. It now takes 5-6 days from send to receive (in state) verses 2-3 days previously.
