well if everythings goin digital, i dont see a point in getting anymore analog electronics…
I am fighting the internal budget battle. I either buy this or a head of lettuce. Both are about the same price these days. As the last guy in the world without a DVR, this seems like a no-brainer. Nice woot!

O Larubio, Larubio! wherefore art thou Larubio?
Deny thy midnight musings and refuse the deal
Or it thou wilt not be, be but sworn my love
And I’ll no longer complain about the stuff you buy at woot!
great, thanks for the response! I got one ![]()
Law requires v chips be on all TV tuners for several yeats now. Im not sure if PC TV tuners are required but I wouldguess they have to comply.
No Divx/Xvid playback either. ![]()
what do you expect for such a great deal? i wouldn’t call it worthless but technology moves fast and there is always a use for this somewhere in your house.
This looks great- I WOOT!ed one. Last time I bought a DVD recorder it cost me almost $300 (Phillips)- $75 shipped seems darn cheap, and this one does tricks my oldy won’t. Also it’ll go real good with the other nights JVC MiniDV WOOT! deal, of which I also WOOT!ed! YAY!
Downside, has been covered elsewhere: no HD upconversion and no SVIDEO.
But For $70 bucks here’s what you DO get:
- records in all DVD formats: DVD+ (taste great) and DVD- (less filling)
- ability to backup your DVR/TiVO hard-drive recordings to save space
- ability to copy all your VHS tapes/camcorder tapes to DVD
- user reviews everywhere claim not a single failed burn (good news for those of us tired of making coasters instead of movies)
- method of setting it instant-on recording (record/pause)
- brand new, not refurb
If that doesn’t cut it for you, apparently on top of that you can copy (or view) DVDS made for any world geographical region (US/ASIA/EUROPE, etc). [ you add that capability by using the remote - “hack” listed elsewhere in this forum]
The mfr’s website suggests that the woot item does NOT do DivX playback, because other (apparently more upscale) DVRs that are listed on the same page as this one DO have DivX playback listed as a feature. (I would paste the link, but I can’t get it to work.) Best Buy has a Lite-On DVR for $99.99 that will play Div-X.
I picked one of the JVC MiniDV too. I have used mini dv with a drd recorder and it is cool. the dvd recorder controls the camcorder for you so it makes it real simple to control. Now I got one of my own to play with ![]()
I keep hearing that the reason my DVD’s don’t look good on my new fancy HD-TV is because I don’t have a progressive scan player. Is this going to take care of that?
if you really want DivX support, geeks.com is selling a different model for about the same price delivered, but it’s a refurb.
can it hook to my pc??? ( I hope )
Can you burn movies from your computer on this? Or only off the TV?
I’ve now had two of these. They are good at what they do, but don’t expect them to work for lots of DVDs.
I bought one in January 2006 to record shows that are stored on the Dish DVR. It is a little slow reading and finalizing the DVD but otherwise does a good job of recording at 2 hour speed. At 4 hour and 6 hour quality there is blocking but sufficient for the Disney shows the boy likes. Oh, and the fan is very noisy; if it is left on it is very noticeable with an otherwise quiet room.
The problem with both units that we bought was that after about 200 DVDs they stop burning consistently. It starts with one or two coasters per ten and after a bit it is every third disk. Air doesn’t clean it out; it doesn’t appear to be dust - perhaps the tracking motor loses the ability to track. Dunno.
Fortunately, we bought the first at Costco so after five months they took it back and I got a second one. The second one finally failed last week and Costco took it back as well. Costco no longer sells the LiteOn brand of DVD recorders so I splurged on a Philips DVD recorder.
We estimate that we recorded 400 DVDs between the two recorders. We also bought two of these for Christmas gifts in December 2005 and they are still running fine for our parents but they don’t record very much.
Awwww c’mon…where’s your sense of adventure?..where’s your sense of humor?
The “stories” are the best part! LOL
Oh…and I wonder why Larubio didn’t carry the King (and the LiteOn DVD Recorder) out after he conked him over the head with the golden goblet. Hmmmm…
I wondered if I can put a hard drive in there. Since it has an IDE DVD BURNER I wondered if anyone here has heard about doing that. Any idea?
PS if you’re into AV stuff I found a super forum here.
and a link to a thread for view pleasure
PS - They’re in the UK and some models aren’t the same
But the good things are these:
1 They have about 100 forums for everything AV. Check them out
2. … I can’t remember the 2nd great thing about them… hehe. sorry.
but back to 1. they even have home automation. everything that’s electronic in the house they have some forum about. It’s huge.
I’d ask there about my Q but I’m here now…
no remote with this DVD recorder???
I’ve got a similar model rebadged as a Presidian. Very small, very nice, a little slower than some DVD Recorders I’ve used, but you can’t beat it for the price.
