Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2021

Not sure about an official answer but it’s generally a good idea. This isn’t an upgrade; it’s a full new install.

Thank you, @ThunderThighs. Appreciate the caution.

As a teacher, I still get infected Word files from students. I would pony up for the latest release.

Thank you for the caution, it’s of value to know. For anyone, like myself, who only creates WORD Docs for my own use and/or sends them as .pdf’s, not an issue.

As a cybersecurity professional for critical infrastructure, having security updates for Microsoft Office won’t necessarily guarantee protection from infected Word, or any other files. It is one layer of defense-in-depth, which should also include appropriate anti-virus/malware protection.

  • Do not enable macros in documents that are not from a trusted source.
  • Ensure you are either using, at least, Microsoft Defender or another reputable anti-virus/malware scanning tool. Use that tool to scan files before opening.
  • Make sure that real-time protection is turned on to scan the files as they are written to your local storage. Yes. Microsoft Defender supports real-time protection and should already be enabled by default on Windows 10/11. Though in my real-life tests, I have found it to be much less than perfect. Files written to local storage are not scanned until the files are opened or copied to another location. Want proof? Go to eicar[.]com and download their test TXT file. It’s not a virus (it’s a “signature” that looks like a virus), but it will prove that files are not scanned by Microsoft Defender when written to your local storage. However, when you try to open the file, it will block it. Try copying it and it will delete the original, but the copy will remain. What can you do to better protect yourself? Right-click the suspect file and choose Scan with Microsoft Defender before you open the file to actually use it.

“certificate of participation” sounds like “participation trophy”, i.e. not a meaningful contribution.

giving something “the old college try” is making a meaningful effort at least in the form of optimism and honest effort.

the two messages conflict.

I’m sure @ckalis made it clear, but just to reiterate, your issue seems to be about the install options you are seeing. I apologize for being so basic here but as a software instructor for many years I’ve come across numerous students who are unfamiliar or confused with technical aspects that many of us take for granted. Believe me, I’ve tried to teach solid modeling software classes to NASA Managers (Solon, Ohio) who I “assumed” would come in at a high level yet they had never used a mouse & didn’t know what a cursor was.

The options pertain to the installation process for numerous different apps (incl. Windows) whose license(s) may have been purchased from WOOT (or possibly elsewhere) .. however only one of the options apply to this particular product .. Microsoft Office for Windows .. as @ckalis so clearly shows with his diagram, and is meant for those who already own Windows.

I don’t know you and certainly don’t wish in any way to demean or assume to know your knowledge base. I just seemed to ascertain a slight bit of confusion on your part. If I misread the situation, please forgive me.

as a present day systems engineer, back in the mid 90’s we had the same issues when staff switched from macro based cpm/vax/AS400 terminal , ect . i suggested putting Solitaire
back on machines so they could practice, to which they those in charge thought “brilliant”!!

Brilliant indeed! I LOVE your video clip!! I think it’s of one of my NASA students.

I’m sorry! I shouldn’t make light. Imagine the student’s frustration & confusion. As an ex-instructor, these student’s AH-HA moments are often the most rewarding and enjoyable!
