Mystery Chromebook (Scratch and Dent)

Mystery Chromebook (Scratch and Dent)

I actually could use a super low end laptop or Chromebook just to type on my bed. I use a two-in-1 primary laptop which is not good for typing on your lap.

But if I ended up getting one with only 16 GB SSD. I mean I wouldn’t even know what to do with that.

But if anyone can recommend any super low end Chromebook or laptop that could suck at almost everything but just have a decent keyboard… I could probably even live with 32 GB and 4 GB of RAM.

Assuming I just use it for word processing and maybe the lightest of research?

I’m thinking you might be better off looking for an open box chromebook from best buy.

You’d be better off taking pen and paper to bed than wasting your money on these. They are called mystery boxes for a reason.

If you would get something marginally functional they’d be called fun boxes.

You could add in an SD card to make up for the low storage. If you are going online, you may want something that is still getting updates. Lots of viruses and nastiness out there.
If you are ok with used, Craigslist or FB Marketplace may have selections for you.

Chromebooks tend to be lightweight devices, meaning, more likely to choke on intensive tasks, like video. However, a lappy with an 11" screen is handy to have bedside or on a coffee table, always-on and ready for a quick browse. I keep a 2016 MacBook for this use.

So, if you rcv a 16gb unit, you could upgrade its OS to a version of Linux, some are extremely tiny. And unless it uses an eMMC onboard storage, it may have a SATA ssd and be replaceable.

The greatest aspect with these is this:

  • A majority will be EOL and not receive Chrome OS updates

These can be had for less and are supported until 2029:

Amen. I’m not sure why anyone would spend money on most of these mystery computers when there is almost always something available on Woot that will be guaranteed to be as well equipped as the majority of devices in the range of the mystery devices at a similar or better price. The Chromebooks in this batch are ewaste. Instead of paying someone to haul them away they are getting people to pay them for it. It’s almost to the level of knocking on some strangers door and offering to pick up their dog poo.
