Mystery Laptops

Not sure why this is a deal? You can buy the minimum spec at a much lower price. (Like around $125.)

This would be a good deal 2 years ago.

Where can you get an i7 processor (or i5) with 16GB-32GB RAM (possibly) for $200 or less? Nowhere. Problem is that you don’t know what you will get - the minimum is i5 and 8 GB RAM which wouldn’t be that great for ~$230 or whatever the total comes out to be

2 questions for Woot Staff or anyone else who may know the answer:

  1. Does Amazon Asurion Complete Protect apply to Grade A purchase? I already have the Complete Protect through Amazon.

  2. What are the differences between Grade A and Grade B? Cosmetic only?

Thanks

Hi there.

The below is a link to the Woot item condition glossary.

Really? 30% chance of getting something less than 1080p, and the lowest processor is a U-series, 8th-gen i5? And a 15% chance of getting stuck with only 8GB of RAM?

Jesus. Here you go. $140 for those bottom-barrel specs. This laptop roulette is absurdly overpriced, even by Woot standards. Do NOT buy at these prices, folks.

The lowest spec possibility you are using as an example is form a 3rd party seller through Newegg with a 30 day warranty vs 90 day + possibility of getting something with higher specs and easier return if needed. Just $70 difference. Woot seems like a better deal.

That was picked out of a hat because I didn’t feel like looking harder. And it’s not even technically the lowest spec, since it has a 1080p display, it was literally just the cheapest laptop with an i5-8250U processor that I could find on short notice. But since you’ve brought it up, let’s look for some compelling alternatives, shall we?

Hell, here’s a list of 8 in-stock laptops with better-than-minimum specs for less than or equal to what Woot is charging. As I’ve stated in the past, I only use Newegg for these comparisons because they have robust filtering, not because I endorse them as a store.

Here’s another option: a refurb from Microcenter with a Ryzen 7320U. It will likely smoke anything that’s in this sale, and it’s only $230 (provided you live near a Microcenter and can pick it up). Is it unfortunate that it’s stuck with 8GB of RAM? Sure. Will it be better-supported, in the long term, than a laptop released 8 years ago? Almost undoubtedly. Or what about this guy from Best Buy: a refurb with an 11th-gen i5, 16GB of RAM, and a 1080p display.

My point, overall, is that there are better deals to be found. Yes, some of them might be through third-party sellers. Yes, some of them might not have the 90-day warranty. But at the end of the day, if you’re worried enough about your laptop dying you think that the difference between a 30-day warranty and a 90-day warranty is vitally important, you probably should stick to buying new laptops with warranties of 1+ years.

Plus your linked unit is touchscreen and has backlit keyboard. It’s Windows 10, but based on the processor it is upgradeable to Windows 11. The only thing not readily clear is if it has BT.
Good find, great price.

I did a really quick search on eBay and get this. It’s a complete system, with 8th gen i5, 8GB RAM and 256 SSD.

I know eBay can be hit or miss. But when I look at this it’s for $99 plus tax.

Anyway, just my two cents.

what about a list of options that are the same as the highest possible specs and similarly priced?

We don’t know the highest possible specs.

I recently received my laptop, but I’m unable to activate Windows 11. I’ve already updated Windows and tried the Activation Troubleshooter, but it still won’t activate.
