Really missing out on having an internal chargeable battery.
PORTABLE DESIGN: […] You can operate it via […] 8 D batteries (not included).
Yes, you can get rechargeable D cells. The mothership sells them starting at $23 per 4-pack, in NiMH or lithium flavors.
I’d say you are better off with standard batteries. After all, they have easy replacements, and you can get rechargeable ones if you want.
I’d like to know who is choosing this over a tablet + Bluetooth speaker in 2024?
I agree. An internal battery will just make this thing junk when the battery turns into a spicy pillow. A set or two of Eneloop batteries and you’re golden.
Someone who has physical media like CD’s and DVD’s?
This would be perfect for my disabled sister.
… but the environment isn’t.
The mothership specs say:
“1 Lithium Ion batteries required”
Why, and which battery, and is the first one included? (I expect it’s to maintain the storage/clock/etc, but i don’t want to have to look up, order, and wait for an extra battery for first use.)
Hi there. These are being pulled from Amazon inventory so we don’t have a lot of information. Here it is on Amazon:

That’s all the info that we have. Sorry.
Clamshell portable DVD players have been a thing for decades. A 7" screen model can be had on AliExpress for $30. They are more portable, and way more battery efficient than this. Add a $35 Bluetooth speaker with 3.5mm input and you’ve matched the sound output of this thing. With the money leftover, you can get a refurb fire tablet next time they pop up on woot. You’ve now spent $100, surpassing the capabilities of this thing by leaps and bounds, and never had to touch a D battery. Seriously, I can’t think of a use case for this thing in 2024 at this price.
