Newbie questions about Templates and so forth

Hi there, I am veeery new to this community. I am interested in entering designs into the derby but I still have some questions even after reading the FAQs. I have quite a few, sorry ^-^; For starters,

question about programs: I’m currently using Sketchbook for all of my designing, is this an acceptable program? I’m not made of money (unfortunately) so the more expensive options such as illustrator and photoshop are just out of the question.

Question about templates: Are they needed? Can I make a template without photoshop with something like GIMP? How would I go about doing this?

Question concerning colors: Okay, from reading through a few forums I get the idea that going through the derby means that I can only use a maximum of six “pantone” colors… What exactly does that mean? Is there some sort of swatch chart I should be following? If I had a design in non-pantone colors, would I be disqualified?

Is there an age limit to designers?

Finally, if I am paid by Woot for my design, am I obligated to pay taxes on it?

Oh, one more thing actually (sorry) I know they’ve given me a limit in inches as to what size your submission should be, but what would that be translated into pixel length?

Thank you so much, I really am not that T-design savvy, I’m entirely new to this, sorry if this all sounds very repetitious and stupid

first of all, you have to pay $5 to any1 who replies to your post.

one of the pics you are required to submit, hereafter referred to as the “comp,” must show placement of your design on a tee, so that woot and the voters can figure out how big and on what part of the shirt your design is intended to be placed. you can either use the cartoony template provided by woot (linked to on the entry form page) or you can choose to use your own.

as far as GIMP goes, if you’re not already aware of this, GIMP has some capability to read .psd (photoshop) files, and iirc it can read woot’s photoshop template file.

whenever your design is finished, just overlay the design over a layer containing whatever shirt template you choose to use. make sure that the template is coloured to one of woot’s available fabric colours!

there are pantone swatches available for sale elsewhere. if you don’t already have one, you don’t have to sweat it too much; woot will just try to eyeball the colour and match it up to a pantone colour. however, if you’re a very accomplished artiste who is very concerned that the shirt be printed with the exact colour you want, then you should specify the pantone colours of your inks.

i am fairly sure that every artist with a print is over 5 years old and under 150 years old. if you’re in that age range, you’re good to go.

it counts as taxable income. whether or not you need to pay taxes depends on what tax bracket you fall in. note i am not a tax lolyer; consult a professional tax counselor for real information.

somewhere i think they said the max resolution is 300 dpi, so a 16"x20" design at 300 dpi is 4800x6000 px. i am however not a professional mathemagician, so consult a professional mathemagicks counselor for real information.

you’re welcome. and just kidding about the $5.

Thank you very much! I really appreciate you taking the time to explain all of this to me  I look forward to participating in future derbies!
