Yeah, but the Fuze’s controls are nicer (IMHO;YOMV).
I benchmarked my rockboxed Clip+ at almost exactly 15 hours of q6 Ogg Vorbis.
I haven’t done the same benchmarking with my FuzeV1 (not recently, at least), but ~10-12 hours sounds about right with Rockbox.
I’ve never actually timed playback duration with the OF on either DAP
It’s only as of post-3.6 svn versions from this past week or so that Rockbox supports USB on the FuzeV1. It’s a very welcome feature, but it is possible to live without it.
edit:
Yeah, I should’ve been more specific. Twice the internal storage.
But if you only had an 8GB µSDHC card, that extra 4GB would still be pretty nice.
Does this play WMA files? I ask because someone I know has an account for Recording For the Blind & Dyslexic, and he could download audiobooks to listen to free of charge.
I got one of these in my very first BOC.
Its a happy little player.
One thing of note on the microsd cards.
I had found some cheapy PNY 2GB cards, and picked them up to use. Pictures work, music works, but on video they choke. The player locks up and you have to reset. Like I should have done before, I hit the Sansa boards… I’m not the only one having these issues. There is a partial list of cards that work and cards that don’t. Today I just got a new microsd card to play with, this one is Sandisk so have my fingers crossed. I’ll be back in a bit to let you know how it went.
I’m not saying you HAVE to use Sandisk cards, some people had good results with other/off brand cards, but there is a chance a card you pick will not support video playback from the card.
I love this player. I own three different MP3 players, including a $300.00 Ipod touch, and yet, this is the one I use most often. It is small, convenient and I take it with me in the car and on the boat. Buy this!
I will never buy another ipod. Bought the 4GB version. Probably my favorite Woot purchase. Been waiting to buy this 8 GB version, plus 2 more for the rest of the family.
I’ve had two Fuzes, now (4GB and 8GB), and LOVE them! One annoying thing about them, though, is that they will randomly shut themselves down. My 8GB is by far the worst offender (and yes, I have the latest firmware)… -sigh-
Still love it, though! Excellent UI, with all of the basic features I expect out of an MP3 player (why can’t anyone do that with an Android player so I could use my phone, and only my phone?!).

Alternatively from the main menu
1 - Settings
2 - System Settings
3 - USBMode
4 - You can then set it to AutoDetect, MTP, MSC and it stays set.

How to determine MTP or MSC, just in case you might wonder.
Yay the Sandisk branded microsd card works!
There was a little bit of video stutter when adjusting the volume, the overlay pops up then goes away, but the audio continued and I am able to watch videos. Much better than the other card where it just stops and locks up the unit.

Sounds like you have a V1 Fuze. I have more MicroSD/SDHC cards than I can remember buying, but only one or two of them work for video with my V1 Fuzes.
However, NONE of them malfunction with my V2 Fuzes. Whatever the problem is that causes this grief with the V1, they fixed it with the V2.
The odds are very likely that you’ll get a V2 if you buy this player – I don’t think they made a lot of 8GB V1 Fuzes, and, the last few Fuzes I’ve gotten here have all been the V2 type. The V1 in ANY size is extremely scarce these days – they haven’t made them in quite some time.
However… if you install Rockbox on your V1, you’ll be able to use video via the card without any problems (and, the Rockbox video player is much nicer than the Sansa player – more features, easier to use, more control over display quality, faster frame rate, etc.)

The default setting is to shut down after five or ten minutes of inactivity. You can change that via the settings menus.
Other than that, I’ve NEVER had ANY of my Fuzes shut down on their own.
And for video playback, what all can this thing play? It won’t play .avi movies right? Is there anything that is regularly available in MP4 besides Youtube videos?
It’s divx/avi, iirc, but it is extremely finicky. Not only do the divx settings have to be correct (resolution, etc), the container/muxing has to be exactly what it expects. You’ll probably have to reencode everything (or repack it at the very least).
I love Sansas. I REALLY love my two Fuzes (one new and the other a refurbie), but in my experience, they do NOT get anywhere near 24 hours of battery life.
I play only audiobooks, so maybe that has something to do with it, but I maybe get 8-10 hours out of either of mine. I have the display brightness turned down, I have it persist only 15 seconds, I shut it down, not let it time out, all the right stuff.
The only thing I can figure is that I have the volume turned almost all the way up to be able to use it plugged into the AUX port in my car.
I get the same battery life out of my Clip under the same conditions, though, and it does not claim 24 hours.
BUT, other than that, the Fuze is the best player I have ever used (out of 5 or 6 different models). Best controls, great screen, awesome sound, great size, microSD slot, plays everything, outstanding audiobook (including Audible and DRM from the library) management, simple to load stuff onto.
I bought one of these at a previous offer. It is great! It is lightweight, the sound is amazing and you can drag and drop to fill it up. You can’t miss with this.
