VIZIO 42" 1080p LCD HDTV

Bought this when it was offered on Woot Plus. Everything is great about the TV, well everything but the dead pixels in the middle of the display. It’s likely going to be hit or miss if you get a good quality refurb, so keep that in mind before you purchase.

I know nothing about these HDTVs. I have resisted buying any of the flat screens until my old one finally quits. Well, I think my old TV has turned in it’s 2 week notice.

So, my question to the Woot community (specifically, this thread) Is this a good buy for the money? It would be my first flat screen and I have no idea what is good or bad.

Ideas anyone?

Spending YOUR money? I’d buy it. Spending MY money, I’d wait for a deal on a new one. I have a Vizio 26 inch LED lit LCD TV I got a couple of Black Fridays ago and it has been a good TV. Reading the other posts about this particular refurb–reviews seem mixed.

I bought a referb 42" Vizio in 2008 and it just broke a few weeks ago. It cost me $200.00 to have it fixed. Since then I have researched Vizio’s and I can definitely say that I will NEVER BUY ONE AGAIN! You’ve been warned. Read consumer reports and find the best brands. Sony is one of the top. If you just want a TV for a few years go for it. They are notorious for bad capacitors, bad boards and horrible customer service. Google it and read the blogs.

I got this from the deal a couple weeks ago, great tv with the exception of massive amounts of dead pixels in two separate locations on the screen…

$329

New: LG 42" 600Hz 720p Plasma HDTV for $329 + free shipping

Fry’s Electronics offers the LG 42" 600Hz 720p Widescreen Plasma HD Television, model no. 42PA4500, for $329 with free shipping. (Price shows during checkout.) That ties our mention from three weeks ago (which was via pickup) as the best price we’ve seen for any LG 42" plasma HDTV. (It’s also a current price low by $70.) Sales tax is added where applicable. Features include a native resolution of 1024x768 (720p), 600Hz refresh rate, 3,000,000:1 contrast ratio, two HDMI inputs, and VGA and other video inputs. Deal ends August 16
Unless you watch a lot of Blu-Ray or other 1080P source the new LG is better deal. No free over the air TV is broadcast in 1080P and you have to pay extra for the few 1080P movies from cable or satellite.

Unless I’m missing something, this isn’t a very good deal.

For $50 more you can get a newer(edit: actually it’s an older) model with 4x HDMI ports, a 5ms response time, and a 2 year warranty (less then the 1 year square warranty) from Costco.

http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11747923&whse=BC&Ne=4000000&eCat=BC|90607|2341&N=4047302%204294904820&Mo=8&No=6&Nr=P_CatalogName:BC&cat=74672&Ns=P_Price|1||P_SignDesc1&lang=en-US&Sp=C&topnav=

Tax might come into play but still, a refurb with a 90 day warranty of a slightly newer (edited) model for only a $50 discount seems pretty lousy

edit: appears the one at costco is a slightly older model: E420VA vs the woot E421VO. Even with this information, the deal seems lackluster at best.

See, now - I have to disagree a bit. I bought a 32 inch Sony Bravia for myself a few years ago thinking it was a better brand and I hate it. It has a lot of glow. Last year,I helped pick out a large Vizio for my parents (who aren’t as picky as I am) and it seems much nicer. When I replace the Sony, I’d go with Vizio.

But my main TV is a Panasonic Plasma - which I LOVE, but has floating black issues that annoy me.

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT!!!

When you buy refurbished you are taking a chance.

I just purchased a 40" TV from Woot refurbished, it arrived yesterday. I have to send it back for a repair/replacement. Its was defective right out of the box. If I can, I will try and get my money refunded and buy a “NEW” TV. This is the first time I have bought a lemon from Woot.

So you have to ask yourself: Is it worth it to save a few dollars.

thanks for editing, though. apples to apples & all that.

There was an insert paperwork saying the company covered the product under warranty for 6 months, although I am assuming that the 3 month warranty is the deal.

If you have paperwork saying it is 6 months, then it is 6 months. It would be hard for a company to wiggle out of that one in small claims court!

I don’t need another tv, but that is the sweetest
baby picture I think I have ever seen. What a cutie!!!

Oh, how badly I want to buy this TV but atlas… I am having a hard time trusting Vizio. I am watching the olympics right now on a Vizio that no longer has a single working HDMI port (out of 3) and just did a down-&-dirty Google search to reveal that I am not the only one with the same (or similar) issue. Yes I called Vizio and they had a quick fix that didn’t work, yes the tv is out of warranty and they suggested a couple of repair companies for me :frowning: Sadly Vizio, you’re reaping what you’ve sewn…

Kinda makes me wonder why woot! has so many refurbished VIZIO TV’s for sale… VIZIO must have a lot of new TV’s break, and sent back to them to be refurbished, if woot! is able to sell them here on a consistent basis.

Wow…just took delivery of this TV and literally only received a slab of screen. No power cord, no remote, no stand, no screws for said stand, no manual. Oh, and the “stand neck” that should be on the back of the TV to even accept a stand? Not even there.

Really, Woot?

Of course I’ve sent my obligatory email off to service@, but there’s no one staffed on weekends and I’m fairly upset with this. First Woot order to ever be disappointed in. Hope someone helps soon.

My TV arrived two days ago. I just had the chance to set it up. While I did receive the stand, remote, and power cable unlike the previous post the picture was another story. Upon turning the TV on for the first time there are six separate spots in the picture that are bad. Not just a dead pixel here or there, the spots are just a hair smaller than the size of a dime and they light up white, no matter what the rest of the screen is showing. I am not pleased with the issue of this TV. I also have sent an email to Woot Service. This is the first issue I have ever had with a product from Woot.
