I suspect that the distance from the round “weight” bar to the floor would be thrown off by hanging a couple of grocery bags on them. I’m tall enough to work it, but my wife isn’t…

You may need to upgrade to that on the mothership. Should definitely help your wife’s ground clearance.
Now they are trickier to get balanced with grocery bags on each side. Once balanced, you can more bags in a trip.
