I have copied over 80 video files onto the player … and it will NOT PLAY ANY OF THEM. what the hell’s the point of a media player that doesn’t come with ANY codecs that anyone still uses? MPG1? give me a break. charging $40 more just to make the thing functional is highway robbery. WMV doesn’t work (30 different files from version 6 up to the current one). AVI doesn’t work. MP4 doesn’t work. VOB doesn’t work.

half the time, the player won’t even show up in win. explorer and I need to hard-reset it (dislodge the battery) to get it to turn on again.

hopefully I can get the firmware update and fix this, I think the oS is corrupted.

Haven’t had this problem at all. I’ve done tons of differen video types and almost all of them work. The ones that that don’t (.mov), I just use Pocket Divx Encoder and problem solved.

As far as the player not showing up, that might be related to your default settings on your player (hard drive, media player, or charge mode only)

no, I have the device set to USB. It -does- show up in the explorer pane as a drive, but if I try to open it, the explorer window just hangs. haven’t tried the media player mode; i’ll experiment with that

You do know that if you plug the USB in with the Archos off, it’ll power up, but default to charging only mode, right? The drive letter will show up in Windows, but it won’t be accessible until you specifically enable the USB mode on the Archos menu.

I don’t know about anybody else but I typed my e-mail in English because your message and Chinese only showed up in question marks on my computer. Probably has something to do with recognizing the Chinese characters.

Got mine in about 36 hours, not bad allowing for the 12 hour time difference. Sent my request in English too. I echo Sir Thurston’s thanks to Woo! Makes the good woot! deal on this even better. I have tried and it now plays MPEG-4+AAC flawlessly, and plays DVD VOB files, but the screen images are anamorphic if the original was native 16:9. Haven’t tried any H.264 yet or any 4:3 VOBs.

So you lucky guys really came back here for tips, I thought most of the people here who bought the unit wouldn’t believe me that archos is giving away free plugin downloads. well, now so many people got there plugins emailed from Archos tech support, so start believing in it, because all we wooters are here to woot for slick deals. BTW getting these plugins are legal, all we did was ask archos to email us the plugins, and it is totally up to them to give it to us for free. lol

I have a few questions regarding the device. First after emailing the Archos China Service did they email you guys back the plugins or how did they send them to you? In addition, is it possible to use the travel adapter to play our videos on TV or does that feature only work with the DVR? One last question I have is how do you record off the TV using the travel adapter? I been playing with it but still have not been able to get it.

  1. They email them back (usually within a couple hours, during the work week. They are small files, but tailored to each individual player.
  2. Per Archos documentation, either the DVR station OR the Travel Adapter can be used to record, but the DVR Station (optional) lets you play the videos on a TV - and not the Travel Adapter. See Chapter 8 of the Operator’s Manual (on-line, hard copy in box, or as a PDF file already loaded in the player).

The cable that comes with the travel adapter works fine for output to a TV. Just plug it into the AV out jack on the 504 itself.

pcmicrostore.com has the PSP screen protector for $3.33 each with buy one get on free coupon, so it’s 3.33 for 2. PSP has the same screen size as archos, so most likely it would work on archos.
