I managed to get the firmware to update, and now it works! woo, indeed.
I am still finding that a LOT of my movies won’t play. specifically (for anyone who reads this
later looking to buy this item: anything made on an apple will probably have the cinepak codec, aac sound, or both. The error suggests aac will work with the podcast plugin, but cinepak won’t work at all.
MPG1 (older mpg files) and MPG2 (dvd-ready mpg files) also don’t work. ditto vob and mov files.
It’s not obvious, but though you can’t MAKE subdirectories under Movies, Pictures, etc, you CAN grab
a directory off your hard drive and paste the whole thing into any of those directories .
So, if you drop a folder called “Fourth of July Pictures” into Pictures, then when you view them on the device, those images will be together instead of sorted alphabetically with every other image.
and they sent my plugins too (For anyone wondering, the plugins are keyed to the device’s serial number. that’s why archos needs your information, not just to verify that you own one. Also means that if you find an illegal download of them somewhere, it’s guaranteed not to work. Pretty clever, really.
I still haven’t received mine. I emailed woot twice but got no answer.

china was good to me as well, which is nice. All files I’ve tried worked without a hitch anyway though. (Mostly xvid tv shows and movies courtesy bittorrent.)
I too have yet to receive this via Fedex. WOOT! CS did send a very short reply after three emails to them that simply stated they were sending “another” unit out that day. That was three days ago, and I have yet to receive any tracking info.
I’ve ordered many items in the past year or so, and this is the first time an item never arrived. I’m NOT happy with the lack of response from WOOT! on this problem. I"m also one of those who ordered a Targus ChillHub which was sold as NEW, but everyone was shipped used “Recertified” units. When we asked them to do the right thing about it, we were asked to ship the items back at our expense.
Now I’m wondering what I’ll receive, if anything with this purchase. I’m this close to calling the credit card and reversing the charges.
it does say in the faq for woot “Know that return freight will be at your expense.” Depending on laws in your state, if what they ship you is outright defective, you may be entitled to recoup that cost, but you can’t expect them to refund you the cost of something until you’ve returned it to them
Anyone else having problems with the music side of this thing? I try to listen to albums using the music section, but all the tracks in the albums are listed alphabetically instead of by track number. And yes, the files are tagged correctly. It’s really aggravating me and is giving me one big old helping of buyers regret.
I got my two plugins from the China email address. I got them a day after I emailed them, and they included the cinema and pod cast plugins. Still gotta figure out how to play and record to and from TV using the travel adapter. Can anyone confirm that the travel adapter can play videos on the TV?
All you have to do is plug the AV cables into the tv, and put the one end into the headphone jack on the player, then press the TV/LCD button and you’re all set.
Well, the romantic honeymoon with the 504 is now over. The darn thing broke on me. First, it stopped charging, then it came up with a RECOVERY CODE 2 and RECOVERY CODE 1 error. I looked it up and came up with a ton of pages with this “Defect”. I contacted Woot.com for an RMA. Hopefully, I can get a replacement unit. . .

I got the same problem. I got an e-mail stating package data received to FedEx and then the package was stuck there. I e-mailed them asking for a new one and they said another one would be sent out. Still nothing. What is going on?

To make up for their failure to ship as expected and as promised, this company should have done the correct and proper thing by shipping the missed package NEXT DAY AIR and via an different carrier in order to make up for the lack of customer focus.

Finally got mine today (July 24) after he**ish long wait. Uggghh. At least the player is great and works perfectly.
There’s a string on Forum.ArchosFans.com (604 and 504) where one fella has reported what he’s found as he upgrades his HD to 160 from 40.
In fact all you need is the cable. Plug it into the earphone jack, push the button on the top of the 504 to switch from internal screen to TV. Standard color coding on the RCA plugs, yellow=video, red and white=audio.
I have the 160 gig actually but I’m having an issue with it:
Copying a file to my Archos 504 160g is fine, but trying to copy anything at all, no matter what the file size, back to my harddrive gives me an error of “A device attached to the system is not functioning.” This happens no matter what USB port I plug it into and whether I disconnect every other USB device or not.
Furthermore, I can’t get it to work in PC Hard Drive mode at all; the system hangs until I disconnect the device. It only works in Windows Media Device mode.
I’ve had trouble in both Windows XP on my work computer and Windows Vista Ultimate at home. It’s really freaking me out since I bought it in the store yesterday.
