Archos 504 40GB Portable Media Player with Travel Adaptor

Where do you get thwe firm ware upgrade?

There may be some partitioning issues that are a bit unclear in the ArchosFans thread - did you just set it up as one big partition?

The Archos website under downloads at www.archos.com.

Well I didn’t really set it up as anything. I just plugged it in and copied things over out of the box. Do you really think that would help? It reads as a 160gig total device, but I can’t connect it as a PC harddrive.

Should I reformat it? And if so how do I do it? I also bought both plugins, will those be lost?

See the thread at Forum.ArchosFans.com (604 and 504) where the one guy talks about what he’s found as he upgrades his HD to 160 from 40.

I don’t think his problem is upgrade related, especially since he has no woots yet. It sounds like he bought an actual 160G 504 and is having problems with it. He should probably consider exchanging or getting an RMA for the unit.

oh yes, I didn’t upgrade it myself, I bought the 160 g unit.

and here I was hopeful you might fix it. :\

heh, I really don’t want to have to take it back, I just brought back a Creative player to switch it with this one and it’s a whole lot of work constantly transferring!

You can’t think of anything?

No where in the travle adapters description does it say you can output video, only record from it. If any one has had success putting video out through this unit, I would like to know about it.

Have you tried a powered USB hub or another PC? It could be that the PC isn’t able to supply enough current to the USB port. I’ve seen things similar to this with other USB powered drives when their power requirements exceed the USB port specs. If it’s not that, then it’s likely to be a problem in the Archos.

KuoH

He just described how it’s done. Why don’t you just go and try it yourself? I took a 4 hour trip yesterday and was playing the video out to the car’s TV just fine using the cable that came with the travel adapter.

KuoH

I plugged it into a powered hub and it’s working now.

Damnit! :stuck_out_tongue: And I just formatted the thing too trying to see about partitioning it.

Well at least the drive isn’t shot then. Funny I always thought that devices perform slower in an external hub verses the internal ports.

Thanks so much man!

well now here’s a different issue; when I load songs in and view them in the library by album, they aren’t displayed in the correct CD order. they come out alphabetically.

Yeah… i noticed that too…

Hi everyone… On the subject of obtaining free copies of the plugins, can I get them with my new 704 WiFi too? I never had an Archos before so I don’t know how this works. Should I just email the tech ppl in China and ask for the plugins?

It’s just that I got the 704 and my brother has an old 4 series so we both want the plugins. I feel they’re a bit cheap forcing us to buy the plugins when I’ve spent so much on the device itself.

I’d really appreciate the help.

Thanks

Did you read my post? I ouput NTSC video to my TV. Clear?

Help, anyone??

If I were to guess I think it’s more about licensing than making a buck. Those codecs are owned by people who try to keep proprietary control over them.

It’s been 2 days but no reply from the tech team… Does it usually take that long?

The thing is that for me to convert all my DVD’s to AVI take a hell of along time.

Yea I must have had issues from reading reading too many posts. I go back and read what I quoted and I think, “what was I thinking” Thanks for your help.
