Not sure of the difference but that’s a X54C-BBK7 and we’re selling a X54C-BBK13.
Is this better than a netbook for carrying around with me to get office type stuff done on the go? Thinking mainly of battery life and portability, then speed etc.
It costs about the same. Does anyone have a netbook?
I know netbooks are considered passe but I need a keyboard (not the touch pad thing like on a tablet) and don’t want to fork out $ for an ultrabook so thanks to anyone who answers.
Also, can you play diablo 3 on this? Just curious.
I bought this the last time it was on sale at woot. Works well, plenty fast enough for me. I wish it did higher resolution than 1366 x 768. That would be my only complaint with it.
I still use my ASUS EeePC 901 after all these years. I’ll never go back to lugging around a heavy full size notebook. I have my desktop for gaming and “work.”
That said, I’m looking for a cheap notebook to get my niece. It has to be able to play Minecraft and some other games. I’ve heard some of the newer Intel graphics chips are capable of gaming, but I’d have to do some homework first.
Pentium processor… maybe okay for the price, but for heavy computing, an Intel Core processor would be better.
I do have a netbook (Acer Aod255 with Atom N450), and it is okay for stuff. I just wish it would load faster (which can be solved with a SSD and a configured system).
Am seriously considering canceling my preorder for the new $250 Samsung Chromebook for this Asus. Anyone want to try to talk me down?
Chromebook advantage: lighter (by HALF), quieter, cooler.
ASUS advantage: HDD, keyboard size (NUM pad for data entry), actual OS.
We recently bought one of these or one of it’s BestBuy kin…and I kind of regret it, even though it’s a gift for someone, not even two days into setting it up for them…the ctrl key started sticking. Touchpad is overly sensitive. It surprised me because we also have a 4 year old Asus Netbook which feels way better built then this model.
The main difference between the two is the different CPU architectures.
The Samsung Chromebook uses an ARM CPU, while the ASUS uses an x86 CPU (compatible with 32 bit and 64 bit x86 operating systems).
On the older Chromebooks, you could install Windows, OS X, or a normal Ubuntu setup if you wanted to.
On the newer ones, you would have to do some special stuff to get a Linux distribution (other than Chrome OS) to load, and then to run Windows you would have to have it run in an emulator (being quite slow). That’s without the hard drive being a limiting factor (which it is, and would prevent Windows from working in an emulator due to it needing ~30 GB, plus space for apps).
You could put Chromium OS on the Asus if you wanted to, since Hexxeh has some builds that may work, and Chromium OS is open source.
Thank you for your input/help
I think I will go for a refurb netbook…lugged this notebook I am using now around last week and it was cumbersome to say the least. If I needed a replacement this seems like a good deal though.
Awesome write-up. Made me literally LOL.
So very tempting. I’m a Paramedic and I’m using my big bulky Dell in the ambulance as I type this. My Toshiba died recently so I’ve been stuck using this one.
For those who have this, is it pretty portable? Or is it more for a home type laptop? How does it hold up?
My Acer laptop have been giving problems [eg. hang up, screen freeze, etc…] recently after 4 years. Been watching Woot, and finally now “click buy” for this laptop. Hope this would be a good buy. Cheers to all.
Got the similar laptop from previous Woot and it is doing fine. Performance wise is definitely higher than Atom based netbook by a quite a lot.
Just replaced the HDD to an SSD and the perceived speed (like opening applications) is improved by quite a margin.
last thing I can do: previous woot from september, same $279.99

good night
I have macs. My sons want to do “nifty” stuff with minecraft. It seems that PCs are WAY better for this. My fave geek friend suggested I watch Woot for good deals on a PC (since we are really poor right now). So, this shows up. I don’t really know computers. I read through the comments and just got more confused. If you had a kid that wanted to do lots of fancy stuff with minecraft - would this work?

ok, real quick, over 80 comments in previous woot in my post above you. Click it and read through. I am no gaming expert, light gaming is ok, more than that is where the debate starts. Others should comment later this morning, bye.
I likely wouldn’t buy this myself because if you ever want to do something gaming-oriented with a laptop, I would suggest avoiding Intel-based Graphics chipsets. I’d be looking for an ATI Radeon or an nVidia GeForce chipset in laptops.
would this be any good for video editing?
