Bleu Owl Roasters Whole Bean Coffee

Bleu Owl Roasters Whole Bean Coffee

Meh. My price point for coffee is $8/pound packaged in1lb-3lb packages. 3x10oz bags is less than 2lbs and more than $10/lb. And 10oz bags tells me they’re trying to screw with poeple that standardize prices. Screw them, and the e-tailers hawking their wares.

Broad assumption there.

It’s not uncommon. There’s this one, this one, this one, and more.

No offense intended, but that is just a very ill-informed take on the price of freshly roasted coffee beans and the size of these bags for beans. 10 oz bags tells us absolutely nothing of the kind that “they’re trying to screw with people that standardize prices” (whatever that actually even means). Depending on the quality of these beans and their roast on 'em, this may be an excellent price for these beans - for good, freshly roasted coffee beans, with no s/h cost added, this is actually a very good deal (unless, again, the beans aren’t all that good). I regularly buy beans from highly-rated roasters all around the country, with roughly two to three 12 oz bags of freshly roasted beans per month, and this Woot price is very hard to beat - with s&h included, I am very regularly paying about $17-$21 per 12 oz bag. (In fact, I also only very rarely see 1 lb bags – 12 oz is the go-to size in the coffee roasting industry.)

I bought this last sale and it was a good cup of joe. Smoking Aces is still my favorite coffee in this type of coffee but this isn’t bad.

"standardize prices” (whatever that actually even means)

what it means is that it is easier for consumers to compare value if sizes are constant. if most folks are used ot 12oz bags, there is no reason for coffee roasters to come up with 10oz…and why stop at 10…why not 8oz or 6oz or 4oz? consumers do their own valuation (like you do selecting stocks) and not following standards (counter-intuitive in such cases because higher volumes should lower prices, so 12oz should be preferred for a win-win) is a red flag. agree with OP.

This price isn’t bad i just with they explained more about the origin of the beans and the roasting date. Woot offered beans from Mad Priest of Chattanooga TN which was stellar in the cup. I pull shot of it on a Flair, and it’s outstanding.

It’s quite common for roasters who are higher on the price scale to package in lower capacity bags to bring their prices down to something closer to their competitors. Go check out some of the true 100% Kona and Blue Mountain roasters, and you’ll see 7oz bags to keep it in the $20 range.

Here in Portland, OR, the higher end roasters like Heart and Coava sell 10oz or 300g bags as standard for that reason. I wouldn’t call it a “red flag” as much as an indicator your per-ounce price is going to be higher. Whether it’s worth it depends on your preferences and the product.

I personally get amazing single-origin whole bean (Honduras, Costa Rica, Ethiopia, Brazil) a day or two after roast from a shop down the street for $1/oz, so online deals aren’t for me anyway.

thanks for the perspective.
“bring their prices down to something closer to their competitors” – therein lies the rub. if you are pricing higher, fine, but don’t make it look like you are pricing equal by lowering the volume. if your value is worth your asking rate, people who can afford will buy a 12oz bag; there is no need to fit in a deceptive $9.99 gimmick. I find it hard to believe that someone buying 10oz bag cannot afford additional 2oz coffee. not to mention the packaging and transport overhead to the planet with smaller sizes.

Weirdly overpriced. Get the exact same thing here for 40% less Bleu Owl - Dark Roast - Whole Bean – De Lux Farms

This link is for a single 10 oz bag for $14.95. This Woot! offer is for 3 - 10 oz bags.

For quite a while, marketers have been shrinking quantities of product to stick to a price point and to avoid obvious price-raising . And by offering a 10 oz portion, instead of a 12 oz portion or a 14 oz portion, it becomes difficult for mere mortals to do price comparisons. That is a devious form of distraction and IMHO, it is lying. That is what I mean.

Specs tab: Roasted to Order

That usually means the beans will be roasted shortly after the sale is over and shipped within a day or so of that. This has been the case for previous coffee sales.

Could it be that a Coffee bean shortage is looming? I too have seen the decrease in oz. Blue bottle coffee is down to 8oz.
