Cuisinart Cast Iron Casseroles

Ah yes, cast iron casseroles, just like mom used to make.

I would not touch any cooking surface made in China…Sorry not happening.

I own Le Cres. saved up to buy them and they will be passed down to my kids…true heirloom pieces.

Perfect. All the more for us.

I have the 5 Quart and with the cold weather have been cooking soups and stews at least twice a week. Couldn’t be happier with the purchase and it cleans up like-new.

Given the option, I’d go with red because red makes things taste better. That said, my favorite flavor is blue.

Actually, uncoated Lodge cast iron is made in Tennessee. It’s the enamel-coated Lodge that’s made in China.

Are these factory seconds? scratch and dents? Or is woot only being “funny” with the cast-out bit?

I’m a huge fan of cast iron. Also a huge fan of Cook’s Illustrated. I recently splurged on a 7.5qt Lodge for $70 on Amazon. This is the normal price. Nothing on sale here. I do love it and the 7.5qt is huge. Cooking is a pleasure, cleanup is a breeze. Do avoid using metal utensils in it.

I was eyeing up the 5qt for more everyday cooking. Low and behold, I walked into Aldi yesterday and they had a cast iron enameled 5.5qt for $29.99. Now that’s a deal. Bought it and I’m happy.

Overall: love the dutch oven, but these prices are not a sale. America’s Test Kitchen ‘Best Buy’ is the Tramontina 5qt which sells in Walmart for $50.

Nope. Brand new, no known issues. Not seconds or S&Ds. Writer humor at play.

Just seared a nice shoulder cut for “Boeuf à la Bourguignonne” in my blue one I bought eons ago.

A pot of this variety is simply a must for even a basic kitchen.

For those of you who have owned Lodge enameled cast iron dutch ovens and Cuisinart enameled cast iron casserole/dutch ovens, which do you prefer?

I have the 5Qt in green. Been using it since 2007 and it is my favorite piece of cooking equipment. Mild interior staining from excessive use is the only negative. It goes directly from the stove top to the oven. I often make Shepard’s Pie, a traditional beef casserole, Chili, and Hungarian Goulash in mine. Buy one!

I bought a Kenmore cast iron enameled pot and the stains are easily removed with baking soda (let it sit for a bit) or barkeeper’s friend.

The enamel looks like it did when it first arrived.

My feelings exactly!

These are excellent. We use ours all the time. I even made bread in it for the first time last week and it came out…nom nom nom…

Bought a red 7qt one from woot back in September 2010 for $39.99 (clearly a better deal). I’ve used and abused it at least monthly and at least weekly in winter.

The enamel has stained a little bit and chipped in one place on the bottom, which was disappointing. I never followed up with Cuisinart though as it happened very soon after buying it and it’s held up great since then so it may have been a manufacturing flaw. Overall I’m very happy with it and highly recommend it.

I rarely buy anything that touches my food that’s made in China, this is one of the few exceptions. I bought my sister a USA-made preseasoned cast iron dutch oven last month but as far as I know all “US” enameled products are made in China now (a couple of European manufacturers are the exception to this rule but their prices are not within my budget).

Cast iron that doesn’t look like something pioneers used? Yes please!

Can’t deny the customer service with Le Creuset either. My brother scraped the enamel off the one my mom has had for 10 years, she called them up and let them know, and they replaced it. Think Cuisinart will do that for you after so long?

Uh-huh. And what else have you purchased recently that was ON SALE more than 3 years ago and hasn’t escalated dramatically in price since then?
[/quote]

Uh-huh…

But first off, EVERYTHING on woot! is SUPPOSEDLY “ON SALE” by nature of the site.

And furthermore, No- I have not noticed that most things recently purchased after 3 years have almost doubled in price.

The government hasn’t quite devalued the dollar enough yet for that… Give them a few more years, they’ll get there!

$39. was a deal, on a deal site.

$69. is NOT a deal, on a deal site.

…Even five years later!

For all the people complaining about the prices: These are about $20 off of the lowest price. For example, the 5 quart is ranging from $75 to $100 over at Overstock, depending on the color you buy.
Yes, these may have been offered more cheaply a few years ago. Prices are generally based off of supply and demand, and the demand has probably increased slightly more than at the same time 3 years ago. That’s how prices work. $20 to $40 off is still a sale. Stop whining; if you don’t like it, don’t buy it!

I hate to be the buzzkill here, but I am done with any type of cookware or dinnerware made in China. There are too many issues with lead and not enough safety checks along the way. I will pay more to know my cookware is safe.

You and your Cooks Illustrated tips. You better be careful Chris is going to come after you for revealing too much. This is unless you are Christopher Kimble and if you are provide away.

I’m not Chris … but he would be proud and say “go my disciple and provide away!”

I bought my Tramontina 10 pc. tri-ply clad set after Cook’s Illustrated’s review comparing it to All Clad and finding no difference. Ordered it online at Walmart and used “Ship to Store”. Performance is top-notch and, thanks to BarKeepers Friend, it looks brand new!
