Consumer Reports HATES this vacuum, scoring it a 43 out of 100 and ranking it 3rd worst in its segment. They hate it on carpet and say “You’ll find far better bagless vacs that cost and weigh roughly the same.”
If you haven’t ever spent more than $100 on a new vacuum before, this will be an upgrade, but otherwise, save your money - there are far higher rated vacuums for far less money.
This isn’t quite the Apple Lisa of Dysons, but it definitely is a second-rate machine that I wish I hadn’t bought, even at the excellent Woot price. It sucks, but not too well, and the turbo head bleeds off more suction. It’s clumsy and often in my way, partly because of poor design (frankly unworthy of Dyson), partly because power cord is too short. WARNING: When using ANY machine with a WIND-UP CORD, pull the cord out ALL THE WAY–don’t operate with the cord partly inside the machine. Risk of FIRE!
I have got to say that I am not quite sure what so many people are complaining about. Bought this from woot! last November and couldn’t be happier with it.
For everyone that is saying that they would prefer a motor-head instead of the turbine one. Why??? Why do you say that? Because it SOUNDS cooler? Or SOUNDS like it would be better? Have you even tried this turbine-head model? I have not had trouble vacuuming anything with the turbine-head, plus if something gets sucked up that shouldn’t be I don’t have to worry about burning out the little motor that would drive the brush. Plus the turbine-head picks up anything I throw at it. Cat hair, litter, food, dirt and so on. Not only does it pick stuff up but it does it with one pass, so I save a lot of time vacuuming by not having to go over everything multiple times.
Also the cord could be a little longer, however who is ever completely satisfied with a vacuum’s cord? Either its too long and gets tangled up or its too short. If its such an issue go buy an extension cord. Wishing a power cord was 5-10 feet longer is not a good reason to not buy a vacuum.
In short this is a very good vacuum for the price you will be paying.
I bought one of these on a previous woot, and I regret it.
The canister is too small. Much smaller than it looks, because there is only about a 1" wide area between the outer and inner walls of the canister that can hold stuff to be vacuuming. I vacuum a 1500sqft area once a week, and I have to empty twice.
Worse is that pet fur gets clumped and lodged up in that area, so you have to reach up in and pull the clumps out. You have to touch the dirt. It’s not a one-hand emptying process.
It doesn’t roll around smoothly. It’s very light and apt to tip over.
The cord is too short by about 8’.
The handle is plastic. This is a problem, not because it isn’t durable. It’s really durable. But to be durable it’s fat. My old metal wand from my old vacuum fit under my couch. This one doesn’t.
The suction is pretty pathetic. This has a turbine head. I was excited about that, because my mother’s central vac has a turbine head, and it works amazingly well. Unfortunately this vacuum has about 1/4th the suction of the central system, and it can’t spin the turbine head reliably. It works on bare floors, but thick nap carpet will stop it.
The one positive of it is that the exhaust air is very clean. It doesn’t stir up any odors at all.
Tempted to buy but might be smarter to buy a Miele vacuum. Miele vacuums might be very expensive but worth it … knowing that I will not have any issues with the vacuum cleaner for 10+ years.
I’m in for one. There may be a mix of reviews here, but the vac I have now is so bad, that this can’t be anything but an improvement, and the price is right. And I have a couple of cats who like to track litter a few feet away from their boxes, and if this will pick up that and their fur, and clean the basement steps, then I’m in.
I’m looking specifically for some to clean my carpeted, Husky fur covered, stairs with. I love that this looks like it wont kill me (I once had my Dyson Ball land on my head - now I vac from the bottom up), but for the price point, I want to know that this will WORK. Anyone have experience with pet hair and carpeted stairs?
We have two upright models and one canister. I would say if I had to pick between I would choose the canister. Advantages of the canister mainly revolve around weight and the ability to get under furniture and also do stairs. The upright has it over the canister in ‘suck’ (although I can’t prove that, it just seems stronger) but it still does a good job. Also the dust capacity on the upright is larger. I don’t like the brush bar on the canister as you have to bend down to the head and pull out a knob thingie to make it work and it must draw some suction away from the head. The uprights have a push button on the top to turn it on and off.
Bought this at Target for around $250. This is the best vacuum I’ve ever owned. Great suction, and very easy to take apart and clean. With the pivoting head and extendable handle, you can maneuver under/around just about anything without having to contort your body.
If mine ever dies, I’ll consider getting this model again.
Um, I have bought 5 Dysons. All of them work, The oldest a refurb from here that I bought in 2005 and it is still going strong. I bought another refurb, a Dyson animal 2 years later from woot, that my mom fell in love with and I gave to her. I have bought a Dyson animal ball and a dc-? new at Costco.
The Dc23 was the only one I hated and returned. It is nothing like the other Dysons. It is air driven. It does not clean well at all. Basically it is like you have an attachment at the end of a hose. The suction is weak. The brushes turn when the air sucks in. I used it twice and returned it for an upright Dyson. It is looks like a Dyson but this does not perform like one at all.
Why would a person have 3 Dysons? I was away on business for several months and the vacuum they had was a crappy Hoover. After a week I went out and bought a Dyson. I then mailed it back home. Yes, it is that serious.
third woot, second Dyson, not disappointed yet! First upright Dyson made the wife VERY happy, so maybe this cannister model will make her even happier-every Housewife needs 2 vacs!!
Bought this during last woot. I am very pleased with solid construction, design and suction. It follows behind me easily enough. Also like the filters that prevent dust while in use. Adjustments are many and well designed. Cord could be a bit longer, but I am OK. Good product at this price point. Bill
Second one of this model also a dc 14 animal.for my money these are wonderful . We have 4 Huskies and theres never a shortage of fur flying these vavuums are great
We bought one of these last year for almost $350 dollars… the canister itself is poorly designed it’s short squat and where the hose hooks up it like loops/arcs and it makes pulling it akward and it wants to tip.
Suction is good. Can’t complain about that.
The power head/brush for carpet, however, IS NOT MOTOR/BELT DRIVEN - it’s air driven. SO if you have thicker pile carpet, the brush will slow down dramatically and or stop!
Yes. I have tried it - I OWN IT. I never use it. We have a medium shag/nap rug on our 3rd floor we installed last year, everytime I use this vacuum on it the brush just slows down to a crawl or STOPS. It’s horrible.
I’m much happier with my motordriven 20 year old electrolux… the brush never slows or stops. Keep your dysons. And “sounds cool” to have a motor driven one? Are you high? gimme a break.
