Foldable Adirondack Chair

Got these last time. Assembly was easy, but man, what a PITA to paint. If I had to do it again, I would buy pre-finished or the fake wood stuff. I tried to do the painting after assembly and sure I missed a few spots so expecting rot from water at some point.

I bought these last Fall. I really like them. One suggestion I have is to sand the arm rests before painting them. I would buy them again though.

¿Por qué?

Purchased two of these a few months back from Woot. Definitely stain, seal, and waterproof prior to assembly. After reading reviews for different stains for pine and fir wood, I went with Miniwax Gel Stain. The gel stain is fairly thick like paint; I mixed it with kerosene to thin out the stain for the second chair. I much prefer the appearance of the natural-looking, thinned gel stain.

The chairs themselves are a good value at $40, but they are not high-quality. Expect a kind of crappy chair that looks decent and will last a couple of years. I weigh 205 lbs, and the chairs support me just fine. A cushion is recommended if you plan on sitting for for than 30 minutes or so. Also, the chairs are a little heavy to carry around, but the portability of a folding chair is a plus. I would rate these a 3.5 on a scale from 1 to 5 at this price point.

I have two of these that I bought off of Amazon. Assembly’s pretty easy.

I highly recommend you stain them with an outdoor stain, and then spray on a weather proof polyurethane clear coat BEFORE you assemble them. They come out better that way, and the parts are better protected. We’ve had them for a little over a year and they’ve held up well. I’m thinking about getting a couple more of these chairs for my back yard.

I highly recommend using Cabot’s Australian Timber Oil for finishing these.

I painted mine and as noted, painting first is a very good idea… but if I had it to do over I would use oil. So many surfaces, the paint looks crappy with bumps and brush marks and scuffs where I turned them over too early to paint the other side etc.

Now I would oil the parts before assembly, then again after. Apply liberally, it’ll still look good if you get too much on.

Mine are from the local hardware store but they’re essentially the same, I think. The ottomans invite people to sit or kids to stand on them but they’re not constructed to withstand any weight aside from your feet. They rack side to side easily and screws pull out, slats come loose. Plus the ottomans make it (more) difficult to get in and out of the chair, so if I had it to do over, I’d skip those.

I bought two of these last time and BOTH sets were missing the same part. Have tried repeatedly to contact the company and getting NO response. Not cool.

Ottoman’s sold out through Woot! Find the same one here on

My instructions:

  1. Tie a rope or wire between two trees, walls or fence at least 5 feet from the ground.
  2. Sand every piece of this chair or what I call “wood puzzle”.
  3. Hung every piece from the rope with a wire.
  4. Prime all of them with oil based paint primer.
  5. Spray paint.
  6. Let it dry and spray paint again (repeat many times).
  7. Assemble.

i bought these here (@ $52 each, not happy about it now either). i used a wood stain/sealer in redwood. you have to seal the pieces or they just won’t last long; and it’s a lot of work to do so. assembly goes fast with a power screwdriver. the work is all in the staining…

i did an ok job on them. aside for the price, they’re good chairs. if/when they do fall apart i’ll be spending $ on a set of quality adirondacks; they are quite comfortable patio chairs…

So, I haven’t seen this in the comments anywhere…should the chairs be painted or stained or something?

: )

No, they should be good to go as is. After all, you don’t see painted/stained fir trees out in the wild, and they do just fine.

You, sir, are a genius.

assembly required…is an understatement it arrived in a 6"X6"’ 30" box, all slats, no partial assembly another weekend project, not looking forward to the Chinese directions and missing parts…

Took some time to stain and assemble two chairs, two ottomans, and a matching table from northern tools and equipment, but it turned out great in the end. I pretreated with minwax wood conditioner, and then put one coat of mahogany flame Australian timber oil, before assembly.

Did anyone have issues with tightening all of the bolts? The bolts labeled in the “c” bag won’t screw all the way on. Just curious how to handle. Any help is appreciated.
