Interesting. Of the few I scanned, most of the complaints were with Windows 8, not the hardware.

A couple of good reviews (4.5 out of 5.0) over at amazon

My neighbor has this very computer and Windows 8 is his only complaint… a MAJOR complaint at that.

I had this laptop for about 6 month. Good build quality and blue ray is definitely a plus. Only complain is sometimes this thing gets hot and the fan runs like crazy. I assume AMD apu might be the reason.

I noticed that too. But I don’t see people buying this for 400 and loading windows 7 when it’s a refurb and office depot was selling these new for 400 recently. just doesnt seem worth the price.

manual

I recently got a 17" HP third generation I3 from staples for @325 after rebate. It doesn’t have a bluray drive which is all I wish it did have. I am waiting for a slickdeal on a laptop bluray drive to add it. Anyway, I will say that Windows 8 was nothing but a complete nightmare for me when I first got the laptop. I installed Start8 and that fixed all my major issues. It has a free 30 day trial then it is only $5 after that. Before I installed Start 8 I was going to return the laptop. Thats how much I hated Windows 8. With Start8 installed Windows 8 is usable for me. Well worth the $5.

With all that crap said this looks like a solid deal for a high resolution 17" laptop with a bluray drive included. If I hadn’t picked up the i3 last month I would have jumped on this.

Some people are just plain silly. By nature we are afraid of change I guess, but spend 30 minutes with Win8 and you will be fine. It is just a fancy new start screen on top of Windows 7. As far as using an app to bring back the old start menu there is really no need to. Need something that you would normally go to the start menu for? Hit the windows key one time, start typing what it is that you are looking for, and bam done.

Windows 8 is the bane of my existence. I’ve had a Windows 8 laptop since January and I hate it. I would never inflict that kind of frustration on anyone.

Two things make this a pretty good buy: the 1600x900 display, and the Blu-ray drive.

I’ll explain why.

On a 17-inch display, 1600x900 isn’t going to give you as much detail as you’d find in a 1080p resolution, but it is a big step up from the usual 1366x768.

The higher resolution makes productivity much better since you actually have enough room for some multitasking (although Microsoft seems to have gone out of its way to make multitasking as inconvenient as possible on Windows 8).

The Blu-ray drive is kind of a self explanatory. A Blu-ray drive alone will generally tack on an extra $60+ to a laptop, and software to play Blu-rays will set you back another $60+. This laptop has both at an excellent price.

The rest of the hardware is fairly typical.

The A6-4400 isn’t the speediest of processors, but it’s more than enough for your general productivity and will even tackle most 3D games (so long as you turn the graphics way down).

As long as you don’t mind the gamble of a refurb, this one is a great buy for anyone looking for something they can take with them on trips to get work done in the hotel room or kill some time with a movie.

You’ll probably find it a bit large for something to lug back and forth to class/work every day, though.

This is the genius of HP. Take a very average laptop like this that has a very mediocre APU (at best), a typical 1600 x 900 display for a 17.3" in it, and throw in a blu-ray drive. Yet the similar HP model that has a screaming I7 and 1920x1080 resolution still comes with a regular DVD burner. Who da thunk.

Would never buy another HP laptop with AMD processor. HP does a crappy job of designing for heat dissipation. Or should I say doesn’t design at all, because they basically shoehorn the same motherboards into multiple models with the variation being screensize, and bad heat sinks. The motherboards will fry in short order (usually right after your warranty expires). With only 90 days warranty on the refurb, forget it. Such planned failure is a sad commentary from a once awesome company (HP). If you value your laptop, get a true Intel mobile processor model.

What this person said; you took the words right out of my mouth!
@Jpelg, we replaced my oldest son’s old laptop (a Gateway with an older AMD dual-core CPU) with an HP laptop with an AMD A8 a year ago, and he’s had no complaints. We did buy it new from Best Buy, though, and paid for their Geek Squad extended warranty (and made sure it got covered under the computer insurance policy we’d gotten for our son’s computers through State Farm). With a refurb, the Square Trade extended warranty would be essential.

I noticed that too. But I don’t see people buying this for 400 and loading windows 7 when it’s a refurb and office depot was selling these new for 400 recently. just doesnt seem worth the price.

Exactly woot I bought this same one new for $399 With Win 7 and put Win 8 on a partition so I have dual boot . Don’t use the win 8 much . Only complaint : HP preloaded Crapware. Fixed that with a reinstall.

Hold -on Bub. If yours has an I3, it may have the i3-3110M which has a passmark of 3058 vs todays which has a passmark of 1624 (almost twice the performance). As far as video processing they are a dead heat. The intel HD4000 is 474 vs the HD-7520 at 471. Your deal is the better laptop. The link I have below is for a blu-ray that may fit your laptop for $77. You should be able to look up you laptop on this site to verify it, or email them.

These are not as hard as you think to switch out. If you feel weird about it, just find a friend that works on these. Here is a video that shows it with an HP DV6000 laptop. It could be very similar or slightly different from this video, but usually it’s like 1 screw holding it in:

How will this run sims 3? I only use my laptop for office work and the occasional game of sims.
