No. Many people just place it on a platform. Walmart sells some good ones for as little as $119, with FREE s/h. I wouldn’t recommend the highly-rated folding ones though. Because the bottom of the mattress is soft foam, the the foam’s grating would cut into the foam. We’ve placed it on a boxspring and on a wooden platform and there is no difference in comfort. You just need to make sure it’s high enough for ease of getting on and off. In fact, you may want it higher than a normal mattress because as you sleep on memory foam, it softens due to body heat. By morning, the mattress may be so soft that it may be an inch or two lower than it was when cold. That makes getting off harder, especially for older folks.
Not sure what you mean because the first photo simply shows a bed with a mattress. How do you know what’s under “luxurious jacquard cover”? How can you tell if it’s plain memory forma or gel-infused foam?
As for gel, the term is usually used to indicate gel-infused memory foam. That is, memory foam with gel particles. Rarely would you see a layer of pure gel in a mattress. My memory foam pillow does have a top layer of pure gel, but it probably wouldn’t be very comfortable on a mattress.
For those who don’t know, the major criticism of memory foam is that i retains heat. Because it closely molds to your body, there is no circulation. Furthermore, the foam itself is an excellent insulator, trapping heat. I’ve never found it to be a problem, but my mom found a regular memory foam topper to be too hot in the Summer. Gel feels cool to the touch, so by infusing the memory foam with gel particle, the overall temperature should be lower. It works for us.
My memory foam is 12"… Size matters! And it starts out hard, and eventually softens against my warm body. Hmmmm … wait, shouldn’t it go the other way…?
As a bonus, these come rolled inside a HUGE drawstring bag that’s reusable. No, you can’t use it to store the mattress because one expanded, there’s no way to deflate the mattress. But it’s great for storing lots of clothes, toys or place over appliances.

Er, no, so stop projecting your Oedipal fantasies. My mom is a lab rat for a lot of my purchases, including Woots. “Us” refers to my gf (who I’ve mentioned in other reviews), but even if “us” referred to my mother and me, what gives you the idea that I was talking about the same mattress? I could have (and would have) meant that we share the same opinion about our respective mattresses.
It’s hard to say because memory foam softens with body heat. My mattress starts out very firm when cold, but softens throughout the night as it molds to my body. The thickest bottommost layer seems pretty firm, but it’s certainly not as firm as a regular firm mattress.
If you want consistent firmness and support, buy a 3-4" memory foam topper and place it over a conventional mattress.
Any ideas out there on how to get this to Hawaii since Woot doesn’t deliver here? Can we have it shipped to Chicago and somehow reshipped to Hawaii (FedEx, UPS)?

According to Cousineaud, a rep from the manufacturer, the 12" model has a density of 35. And “The support layer is a firm support layer of 2 pound standard support foam.”

Woot won’t handle the transfer so you’ll need a contact in the continental US to reship it to you. Or maybe you can do it through the shipper. UPS, for example, may allow you to change the destination for a fee. DOn’t know if they will do it for Hawaii though. Might be cheaper just to buy another mattress from a place that does ship to Hawaii.
