MacRostie 2001 Syrah Three-Pack

Looks like we lost a bottle since last time this was offered on woot :frowning:
MacRostie 2003 Paso Robles Syrah Quartet
$39.99+ $5 shipping
condition: Aged, 2003
product(s): 4 MacRostie 2003 Paso Robles Blue Oaks Vineyard Syrah

im learning as much as a i can asfast as i can about proper wine consumption to allow for maximum enjoyment - and one thing im a little hazy on is how they figure out how long it will last. i understand that after a certain amount of tiem different grapes and different wines loose flavor and taste (but sometimes come back after even longer with say- a black out period between 20 to 30 years on the shelf)
but for a wine produced in 03…how do they know it will last till 09?

The MacRostie was my original Wine.Woot. I thought it was great, especially for the price. (You can see my ratings at CellarTracker if you are curious.) Obviously haven’t had the 2001, though.

Had I not just doubled up on the last offering and at the same time proclaimed that I was going to stop buying wine for a while, I would have doubled or tripled up on this one. Of course, I may get some later in the week just to spite myself. We shall see. That being said, I fully expect this to sell out fairly quickly considering its relative low price and the positive experience we had with the younger vintage.

Educated guesses based on experience. I don’t think most Syrahs are long agers so the 6 years from vintage may be a good guess. In my experience most red wines are probably good for 6-10 years from vintage with some lasting longer. Cabernet seems to be best long aging wine and other varieties vary. Just had a '98 Zinfandel that was tasting very good, so why wait and take a chance of it going down hill? I also had an '87 cab that was still okay if not prime but a '94 zin seemd over the hill to me.

I’d definitely be in for a couple if it was the quartet like last time. At $11 a bottle it’s a good deal at $15… There are a lot of good wines in that price range. Have to think more about this one. I did like the '03. Maybe they can change this to 4 bottles and sell out right away?

I purchased the 2003 from woot the first time. I really enjoyed it and I jumped in for 1 three-pack this time too. Keep up the good offerings!

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn’t this an earlier year? I’m probably going to take 1/2 case…

condition: Syriffic

Haha!!

Sadly, I have to limit myself and pass this week. Perhaps I’ll go out and buy one bottle of this at the local Sam’s Winery.

Let’s hope the winemaker joins the forum this go around. I believe he/she was a no show last time.

*Let me double check this, someone mentioned that they did participate.

We have farm fresh here in hampton/ newport news va. and they have a fantastic grocery store selection. Its quite extensive.

so most of the syrah’s i’ve tried have generally been pretty thick and jammy, which is not something i like in wine. is this typical of syrah as a varietal, or more reflective of the <$10 syrahs i’ve been sampling?

thanks

I just recently purchased a half case of the MacRostie Syrah Wild Cat Mountain 01 at $24 a bottle. I find it to be a very interesting wine in the sense that is smells strange has an EXTREAM White pepper taste and feel and I mean EXTREAM. My wife refused to drink it. I don’t have alot of experience with Macrostie but if this is an indication of their Syrah flavor profile I’m going to have to pass.

I’m in for 3. I saw the MacRostie name and purchased without even questioning it. The first time it was offered I only got one, and was pissed when I found out just how good it was. When it came up on the woot off, I got 3 and had a friend order 2 more for me.

I finished the last bottle on New Year’s Day, and it was a great way to start the year.

Thanks wine.woot!

We can hope and beg.

I think you might be recalling a different Woot as I distinctly recall Steve Macrostie participating last time. I hope he joins us again

The '03 was a screwtop wasn’t it? Looks like this one is a cork…

The '03 was/is a screw cap. Many winemakers are just starting to go to screw caps. Expect to see a large increase when the '05 wines start to come out, mostly the whites. After that, I expect you’ll see more and more wines, especially under $25, to be released with screw caps.

BTW… '05 harvest for Europe and California has been reported to be very good and we should be seeing some fantastic wines, even from the lower end price range! The '05 whites are showing to be mighty tasty. The '05 reds are starting to be released, some a little early IMHO. Wine experts are expecting a mighty tasty vintage from the '05s. Many are saying it should be the best they have had in many years, blowing away the '00 and '95s. Salud!

So. . . even though it looks like a cork, it’s a screw top? I am a bit leary of screw top, if anyone can give me some pros/cons that would be great. I have not yet tasted a good red screw top wine. I’ve had Kiss Chasey from Australia, which is a white screw top and not bad for an everyday white. Still on the fence with this one. Of course knowing my history of woot wine I won’t make it the whole day without purchasing two. DAMN YOU WOOT!!

This debate has been aired several times on wine.woot. Basically, screw caps insure that the wine reaches the consumer in the condition the winemaker intended, with no fear of taint from the cork. Studies have shown that wines age well under screw cap and can be held for long periods of time–altho, admittedly, nobody has had a chance to see what 20 or 30 yrs under screw cap does to a wine. If you are interested, Randall Graham of Bonny Doon Vineyard speaks eloquently about screw caps on his site, https://www.bonnydoonvineyard.com/.

To be clear- this one is a CORK. The last time the Macrostie Syrah was offered it was a later vintage (2003) and that was screwcap… And it was delicious!
