Mr. Coffee Automatic Burr Mill Coffee Grinder

Mr. Coffee Automatic Burr Mill Coffee Grinder

I like this grinder. I bought one last time it was a Woot deal. My only complaint is the SUPER BRIGHT blue led by the grind button. I unplug the grinder when it’s not in use and I remedied the light with a piece of electrical tape.

At least they didn’t decide to put a clock on it. I already have to sync my stove, microwave and toaster oven and they slowly deviate a minute or two.

I only set the clock on the stove. Turned off the clock on the microwave and just don’t set it on the toaster oven.

Does this coffee grinder have conical burrs or the other kind?

Both this grinder and the Cuisinart DBM-T10FR Touchscreen Grinder are both on sale for about the same price. Anyone have experience with both? Sounds like Cuisinart is the better grinder but louder than a jet engine and the Mr. Coffee grinds more inconsistent and prone to breaking.

I’m saw that and was put off by the touchscreen… seems like unnecessary complexity for a burr grinder, But I’d definitely choose it over Mr. Coffee… since fancy brands have worked their marketing magic on me.

I’ve had two of these and didn’t care for them. The hopper - once it’s off, it’s off. I’ve had two pop off on accident and I never figured out how to put them back in after numerous attempts.

The grind is so-so. At its finest, it’s far from espresso

The amount is inconsistent and I rarely get the sweet spot for my Keurig

I found others in the same range more solidly built and reliable

My preferred semi-annual thing … I have clocks on my stove, microwave, etc., turned OFF. I have a Braun wall clock in the kitchen.

I tend to adjust the microwave over-the-range clock because I have it automagically turn on and turn off the light at 0100 daily … so if i go to bed and forget to turn it off, it does it itself, saving energy and bulb life.

@ Wooter986707301 I’m willing to bet they’re conical burrs. Flat burr sets are pretty expensive.

@cheesefood If the grind setting is done by turning the hopper (like my Bodum), then it’s possible that your hopper came off near the coarsest grind setting. On my Bodum, you turn the hopper past the coarsest setting and voila the hopper comes off. This is how you access the burrs for cleaning (the top burr can be removd and brushed out, something I recommend doing monthly). Of course, this model may be different in which case the solution is to RTFM. If nothing actually broke on your hopper, then it came off by accident.

Caveat: most low cost grinders, even burr grinders, will not get down to fine espresso granularity. For that you need to get at least a midgrade like the Fellow Opus, Timemore, or another. You can save $ by getting a hand grinder of great quality (since for expresso you’re probably only grinding 15g-25g).

@Nidogod Unless you’re trying to save lots, a great grinder is the Baratza Encore. Of course if you’re only making drip or automatic drip coffee or French press … I would get either of these are okay. I wouldn’t expect noise reduction from such cheap grinders. (Some complain even the Baratza is loud.)

Disclosure: I have a Bodum $100 grinder that I’ve retired while I use a Fellow Opus grinder with the KitchenAid semi-auto espresso maker I bought here on Woot last November. The grinder’s excellent, the espresso maker … meh. I’m ready for a Rancilio or Lelit.

I think it works with the Grindr app…

Oh… Nevermind

It is NOT a true conical burr. It is a flat burr.

I have owned this grinder for many years, it now has its permanent home at our camp, where it is seldom used. It’s an okay grinder. I read a comment above about the hopper coming off - it’s supposed to when you rotate it continuously counter-clockwise. It simply threads back on in a clockwise direction. Once the hopper is screwed far enough in, it starts to click and you are in the range of grinding. It won’t turn on if the hopper isn’t screwed in far enough. The course-fine setting requires turning the hopper even further clockwise to make it finer, as this reduces the space between the burr plates. The cup that catches the grinds sort of snaps into place so you can’t operate it without the cup in place. Once the cup is in place and the hopper is in the grinding range, the pushbutton starts/stops the grinding (there is a timer that will also shut off the grinding). On days with really low humidity, the fines will go everywhere when the cup is removed (but the same thing happens with my much more expensive and daily-use Capresso). Bottom line on my opinion is that this is a basic grinder, if you want a really good one, spend $200+.

Thanks for that confirmation. Those are all good safety features.

I have the same issue with the bright light, I just don’t push the container in quite all the way unless I am using the grinder. The light doesn’t come on if the container is not clicked into place. For me this is less annoying than needing to plug and unplug the thing.

The Encore is excellent, my friend has one and raves about it. I bought my son the Oxo Brew Conical for about half the price of the Encore for Christmas a few years ago and he says it makes great espresso as well as regular drip coffee.

An alternative is putting the grinder on a small smart switch. Some smart switches have a button right on the front, so you don’t even have to use them with an app. But if you DO use with an app, many smart switch apps let you set a schedule with which you can have the grinder ON when you need it, but OFF when you don’t need it and want to extinguish the blue light. :light_bulb:

Another idea that I use on several things. LED “dimmer” stickers that you put on electronics to minimize the glow. I have one on my Apple TV, another on my work laptop’s “NUMKEY LOCK” light, another on my LG TV’s Magic Remote mic opening (to block it responding to sounds),… lots of uses. I have some on devices in my bedroom to dim the LED lights that otherwise would glow all night long. … You can find these sold in large sheets on Amazon and other sites.

Smart switches appear here on Woot regularly. I think there was a 4-pack in the last week or so, might still be active.

I hesitated to mention the Encore before, since it is not really a Woot option and costs 3-4x as much , but yeah it is great. Mainly because it is serviceable by owner and they gladly ship you parts. I just hate throwing out a broken small appliance. It’s loud as heck though.

Even James Hoffman — Doc Hoff — commented on how loud the Encore and Encore SE are.
