Philips 32” 720p LCD HDTV
Can you buy better 32 inch TVs? Yes. Can you buy one for $245 shipped? Doubtful. Is it razor thin? No. Is it edgeless? No. Will your bank account be drained after you buy it? no.

Do you always ask and answer your own questions? Apparently yes.

How much better would this TV be compared to a Magnavox digital CRT?
If your only watching the news this would be a good TV for you. If you want to watch anything with action (E.G. Sports, video games, action movies) then don’t get this TV. By spending about $100 or so more you could get a better brand with a higher refresh rate for better picture quality. Think about it, this is something you will be looking at for a while, you might as well go all out and get something you’ll love
Except that HD signals are still only broadcast at 60 frames per second (Blu-ray and HD-DVD being the exceptions). So all a TV with a higher refresh rate like 120Hz is doing is drawing the exact same frame twice in a row. There are some advantages to a 120Hz or even 240Hz refresh rate, but really only in cases where the TV is trying to do frame rate conversions.
The spec that you want to look at for fast action is response time. Response time is the time it takes for a pixel to go from active to inactive or vice-versa. If a TV has a slow response time, it results in blurring around fast moving objects because the pixels can’t physically change fast enough. For a 60Hz signal, the response time has to be below ~16ms (1000ms per second/60 frames per second) in order for the pixels to physically be able to redraw the picture 60 times a second. In reality, anything with a response time over about 14 ms is easily noticeable. This tv is rated at 8ms, so it’s not the best around, but almost nobody will notice the difference.

Does anyone know if this model has a built in digital tuner?

love the doctor who reference!!! very rightly so to tie steven moffat w/the creepy clown image. =D

Don’t go for it. I bought this same TV on 4/13/11 and it arrived DOA. It was a refurb (no roxer) out of Mexico, Phillips said it was never fixed and tells me to contact who I bought it through and they haven’t heard of woot and then when I email woot of course they say to contact Phillips and then Phillips don’t know woot so they won’t help me out with refund or replacement and I am out 240$ still at this point. I got a nice looking TV sitting here, that does not work! I’ve wooted 60 times since here but I’d be cautious on things like this. It’s a hassle to just get your money back or anything, I see woot still had more although they don’t exchange they are not so quick to refund either. :-/

I have a Panasonic Viera 32" 720p TV, that has a max resolution of 1366x768. It can receive a 1080i signal off of OTA broadcast, and I believe it automatically downsamples it to 720p. It is still a very sharp picture, comparable to the 720p broadcasts that the TV displays natively. Now, if you put a 1080p TV next to this one and receive the same 1080i broadcast on both, you’d see more detail in the 1080p set. But with this TV you’ll still have a great picture as long as what you are receiving is at least 720p.

As for devices, if they have a 720p setting it would be best to use that.

I may be wrong but I was under the impression that all TVs made since the switch to digital have them. The very few CRT based TVs you can still find on the shelves even have digital tuners.

Looking at the product description, it says it has an ATSC tuner, which is a digital tuner.

This seems like a good price but if you can find one close to this price at Costco I would go the Costco route. We have a 32" in my daughters room from Costco which cost around the same price but it was not refurbished and we got the extra years warranty which really helps. It is also nice you can try it out for 90 days and return it no questions asked.

Bought one from sellout a few weeks ago. Working great in the bedroom with a Directv DVR, Sony Blu-Ray and Roku player hooked up. Good brightness and dark blacks.

This is a great deal on a second tier “bedroom” or “gaming” TV.

Costco has new TV’s for around the same price but a much better warranty and return service. I myself don’t like buying electronics off the computer because if you get a bad one it is a pain in the rear end to get it replaced or get your money back. With Costco it is 90 days to return no questions asked and an extra year warranty. Sure helps with the headaches.

Thanks! For some reason I couldn’t find that in the product description. Just wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing something.

Im trying to buy this tv but woot declines my card it says “credit Floor” … can anyone explain to me what credit floor means ?

If it didn’t have a tuner, they couldn’t call it a TV. A tuner puts the tele- in television. Without it, it would be called a monitor instead.

I would just like to point out that this is NOT, I repeat, NOT a good gaming TV. The lag time makes any game more stressful than midterms. If you want a good gaming TV with rich luscious colors, go plasma.

Exactly!

it means don’t waste your time here, honestly friend, if you get a bunk tv it will be hell to get your money or a tv back :-/

Sorry I normally do not rant like this but it has been a bad experience overall..beware is all I am saying…monkeys don’t cut it, maybe that’s all you guys have down there in Dallas…

I just bought this tv a couple of weeks ago over at sellout… I love it! I’m only using component cables, but the picture quality is great, and the sound is awesome. It arrived in a snap after I ordered it, and I’ve heard nothing but great things about the Philips customer service.

If you want it, I say go for it! Don’t have doubts just because it’s refurbished. Mine is perfect!
