can i plug a hard drive into the usb port to record shows onto or watch shows off of?
This past woot was a bit of a disappointment, it may be worthwhile to spend a little more. Perhaps one that starts up faster (to simply eject a disc for instance) and better performance in general. Does the job well otherwise though.
Typical inaccurate posting. Prices on ebay are all much higher unless you want a used, open box, scuffed item which was probably a store return and has not been referbed.
My last 4 RCA products died a premature death…Not a brand I’ll ever trust again!
For those about to ask, no, it doesn’t record DVD to VHS by itself because it doesn’t have a VCR.
And, yes, we know you hate RCA.
hah i actually went online to see if that was a actual big problem, when i just got it
nice
Want a quality upconverting DVD player? Get the Oppo Digital unit – top of the pile in the DVD Benchmark/Shootout.
- John…
wouldnt most people want to back up there vhs on dvd’s and not the other way around?
Already have one similar to this too but it’s a mitsubishi, to go with our 60 inch big screen t.v., but would rather have one that backs up vhs to dvds, not vice versa.
Plus we already have the cool TIVO that came with our hdtv thing with Direct TV. Dish Net has same as what we have, so that’s better than this RCA offered.
Decent price tho. I guess.
Night all, have a good wkend!
I bought one of these and used it for about 4 days. The playback of recorded items was terrible. It would freeze and skip, made the programs unwatchable. I returned it as defective and figured I would wait for the technology to improve. That was 6 months ago, and I am reluctant to buy now since if I have a problem with it I would be kinda stuck.
This DVD recorder is nice and cheap, even playing DivX…but 3 reasons to pass woot:
- I don’t want to pay to buy DVDs.
- I’m better off ripping DVDs onto my computer, then hook up to TV with DVI cable.
- I have Dish Network DVR.
I have this unit and mine works incredibly well. The upconversion is truly stunning, the ease of copying vhs and camcorder content, and the skip features all work great.
It is not advertised as a DVR, and should not be considered one.
I paid $200+ last Christmas. Good woot.
Again, the Sammy HD960 has the same chip as the Oppo 971 for less.
OH, and for folks asking about VHS-DVD - probably NOT because of Macrovision.
Indeed. I haven’t used my VCR player in 5 years.
Maybe. The description states that it has a TBC (absolutely necessary when recording from VHS). I wouldn’t count on it stripping macrovision, though.
I actually just found a firewire connection to the thing as well. Maybe you can hook up a hard drive to this thing?? Can any techs answer that question. I have a bunch of woot’s hard drives maybe i can put one to use for my TV ??
I will have to pass on this woot, even though I am itching to woot again!
I love ALL the features of this player, but I have no need for the recording feature and that’s what makes the price high…
That is the main reason I wont be wooting tonight…
It seems I can get it any time later for around the same price if I find I have a need for a recorder…
This is just ONE example of many…

I hate rebates, but it does make it cheaper than woots price, though that really isnt fair to woot…
No hard drive, no Woot. Get us another one with a hard drive, like during the last woot off.
No you can’t. That Firewire port is input (to accept incoming connections from computer?) , not output. So you can’t hook your hard drive to it. Neither can you take a bunch of Shuffles and daisy chain them on here ![]()
From all the comments so far, this DVD recorder can not truely be used as an DVR. I did not see any programmability features like in typical Hard Drive based Digital Video Recorders… It could be quite boring to record only when sitting in front of a TV. “Programming” to record makes a heck of a difference… Any one confirm or deny this?
I also see many bad user feedbacks on this product. Are we getting a lemon? Thanks for any comments.
