Sharper Image 24" Rolling Duffle Bag

In for 2 of the tangerine. I wanted the purple also, my boys would have left that one alone, I am not sure about the tangerine, they might like that. Can’t beat the price.

Well Damn! Missed out on the purple! Will have to settle for the tangerine! Ah well! At least I have a decent carry-on now!
Second Woot purchase of the day…i’m on a roll!! WHhhooooooooot!

I am a baggage handler at a major domestic airline. I see these bags in use every single, dingle day.

If your thinking of buying one of these bags for airline travel, don’t. Here’s why:

Bags are dropped off at check-in, sent behind the wall, screened by TSA and then stacked onto carts for transport to the aircraft. Human beings do all this, and they need to stack all that luggage, 50-70 at a time, in large carts, filling them to over their heads.

Rolling duffles are such large and accommodating bags, we usually see them overpacked to 50 or more pounds each. But have poor handholds on each end and are oddly shaped compared to suitcases. When they are oversized, overstuffed, overwieght and with poor handleholds, handlers who don’t have a 6-foot arm span (like me) are forced to grab them by the the side straps when we have to stack them in the carts and, later, inside the plane. This frequently causes tearing of the side straps (and side straps are not covered under any airlines baggage damage policy).

In addition, sending anything with straps is a very, very bad idea. Bags are put on “belt loaders” to put them in and remove them from a plane, and they go to a belted carousel to get back to you. Wherever you have moving belts and dangling bits or straps (like handles, ribbons or bag tags), you have a recipe for someone eventually getting the dangling big caught in a belt loader and either being ripped off or possibly having to be cut away because the thing is so wedged that we can’t get it out. Again. Not covered by the baggage damage policy.

Finally, soft sided bags (when packed heavy) will always end up on the bottom of the cart, and then on the bottom of the plane. It is not safe for the bags or for the people stacking them to put them anywhere else. They do not stack well, and they cannot protect what’s inside because of the soft sides. I can guarantee, every one of these bags will be stacked every single time upside-down (to make a good stacking surface) and on the bottom (to crush the bulk of it down as small as possible.

This is why, when we see one of these bags in particular packed to 65 pound with a fragile sticker on it, we pretty much laugh ourselves silly. That bag, at that weight, is going on the bottom under probably 200-300 pounds of suitcases. Fragile, indeed. LMAO.

These are great bags if you’re wanting them to transport stuff around town, but do not use them as your luggage.

Remember: Backpacks are for hiking. Dufflebags are for the gym. Moving boxes are for the van. SUITCASES are for air travel.

I can’t believe this many people are seriously stressing over 2 inches for carry on regulations for a soft sided bag. You can make this thing whatever size you want it to be based on your packing. I have a nike duffle that is no doubt the same size, and I always carry it on. Besides, have you ever seen someone stand there with a ruler? And they’ll gate check if the overhead bins fill up.

Because technically the TSA can turn you around at security checkpoint and make you check your bag if it’s over the size restrictions. That’s what they’re SUPPOSED to do, and with the new bag fees, airlines are putting pressure on the TSA to start doing it more.

If you already have a bag checked, you will get hammered with a bag fee. And if you’ve left yourself late getting to the airport, you will miss your flight.

That’s why.

This is a question for those that have them. I’m thinking that I could use this instead of a rolling backpack or rolling laptop case. I’m a school nurse and I need to haul around too much stuff including my first aid kit, lunch and laptop. Can I put files upright in this?

Thanks!

Super-helpful post, GamerEdie. Thanks! You just confirmed what I was thinking about this bag: if I take it on the plane and they don’t allow it as a carry-on, it would be the last time I fly with it.

Agreed!

Guess I’m just lucky then. Never had a problem getting on with my duffle. Definitely agree with your other post about never checking such a thing.

This bag is not just a duffel bag since it has a hard frame and the handle on the bottom. So it may not quite “shapeable” to qualify for carry-on dimensions.

I have almost the exact same model (mine the colors are a little different) I picked up for $25 at a local store. I LOVE THIS BAG! I traveled around the world for 2 and a half months this summer and this bag was AWESOME! Held everything I needed, great zippers, very sturdy, and the wheels are pretty good. You need to be a little careful about making sure it is balanced or it might tip over a little bit. This bag handled subways, airports, boats, trains, busses and walking around Chicago and New York City for days on end with ease. An awesome buy.

Ack… Tangerine is all that’s left? :frowning: Wanted a nice “Steelerish” Gold one.

I saw these bags at a local Marshalls store with an orginal price tag of $99.99 marked down on clearance to $49.99.

The Woot price is less than half of the Marshalls clearance price.
Saw these myself at that store over the weekend and thought they looked nice. Been on a couple of weekend trips recently and realized my carry-on just isn’t cutting it.

The ones at Marshall’s are the 31" and the 21" and for some reason they were both $50. The 21" will definitely go into a plane’s overhead, but the 31" won’t. Looked pretty sturdy for what they are, compared to other bags that have completely rigid sides. I took an old adidas bag into a plane recently, but it wasn’t full so I could squash it a little and get it into an overhead bin. Airline workers didn’t raise an eyebrow when I took it on, so…

The adidas bag itself is bigger than 24", so I think there’s a good chance I can get one of these into an overhead bin.

But I also like the handles and the compartments. I could use one of these, especially for the price. In for one… !

Supposedly both gold and yellow are available. I don’t think that the ones shown are what’s available.
The pics are the ones they sold…gold (looks more brown), purple, tangerine, and yellow. All are now sold out except for the orange tangerine color.

This Woot’s dimensions: 24" x 12" x 13" (49" total)

Drat.
Well that makes it completely worthless. What else are you going to use it for? Anywhere else, you wouldn’t need the rolling function. Oh yeah, except for those people who deal in moon rocks.
Are these small enough to be allowed as carry-on luggage on planes? Or do I have to cough up $10 to check it?

It looks like these are merely produced by the EnE Group that licensed the Sharper Image name less than a year before they went under.

Given the negative and joke comments around now, I could only imagine that they’re trying to dump the now relatively toxic branded products on the cheap.

No idea about how well they honor warranties though… http://www.enegroupusa.com/

Also in for one… can’t resist good quality luggage.

Final edit: Anyone else think that west coasters must be in a traveling mindset tonight?

Or due to the time zone differences, the most of you guys on the west coast will still be awake…

…or become a Bengals Fan XD

Looks like you can’t go wrong for 20 bucks. I’m in.

In for 3, this looks to good to be true. Hopefully they are in good shape!!

Sharper Image is going through Chapter 11 Bankruptsy… this is not a liquidation.. it’s a Re-organization bankruptcy. There are many companies that have gone through this and then rebounded. I’m not saying Sharper Image will, but they’re not totally closing yet.
You are correct. I was under the impression that with the BK they closed the retail stores, but intend to do an online biz.

That’s a smart move since retail stores cannot compete with online competitors. Brick and mortar is outdated on the type of stuff SI was selling.
