OK… I’ve always wanted to know (not bad enough to spend stupid money to find out, but…) what exactly does a “truffle” taste like and is it REALLY worth the unGodly expense?
Unfortunately most food items with “truffle flavoring” use synthetic fake flavoring to (poorly) mimic the truffle taste. The really deceptive products will even use a minimal amount of real truffles just so they can include language like “contains real truffles!” and such. For this reason, “truffle oil” has a pretty notorious reputation among chefs, since the vast majority of it is crap. All that being said, I know nothing about this specific company and can’t speak to their use (or non-use) of truffles.
Real truffles are one of my favorites, but it’s definitely not a flavor everyone likes. They’re very pungent and earthy. If you want to try it, I’d definitely suggest buying a dish with actual truffles at a restaurant, and avoiding anything “truffle flavored.”
