That 32GB RAM memory seems like a mistake, especially at this price point, & compared to drive storage. Is Woot sure?
The price is most likely due to the useless soldered-on 128GB SSD that can’t be upgraded.
Not cheap enough due to 32 GB of RAM, yet not too expensive because of the low 128 GB storage.
It’s anyone’s guess as to why they have a such a configuration in the first place. More than enough RAM, but not enough storage to do anything. And you certainly don’t need a 6-core i7 just to “browse” the web. It’s like they have Woot! in mind from the beginning to resell this when they can’t get rid of it.
I have this but in an i3 and it still works great as a low powered server that I run a bunch of random shit on. If this was like $275 it’d be an allright deal
Yep, it’s correct. Thanks.
I got an almost identically spec’d version of this a couple of years ago, except that it’s the hexacore i5, rather than the i7 (same core count, but the i5 lacks hyperthreading)… Same SSD, and RAM.
It’s more than sufficient for everyday use, for sure. But it is also a total beast for using as a little home lab server, since the RAM is enough to give plenty to several virtual machines, and still have a great little HTPC. Storage is a bit limiting, but if you use a NAS or another network storage solution, you don’t need a lot of local storage for many use cases.
It’s not some schmancy M1, but for the price, it’s actually quite capable for a huge variety of uses. ![]()
It’s not useless at all and you can do plenty with it. I use mine as a 24/7 Plex / Time Machine / Carbon Copy Cloner / QBittorrent / work files server with a couple dozen terabytes of RAIDs and misc drives attached, so 128GB is more than enough space for me.
Considering you can get multiple-terabyte external drives for about $100, it’s not a bad machine. That said, there will be a day when the latest version of Mac OS available for this machine won’t be new enough to properly get online or get security patches, but until then, this should be good for running almost anything that still requires an Intel processor. If my 2015 MacBook Pro (or 2010 Mac Pro) with 16GB of RAM decided that it was done, there’s a chance I’d get one of these as a stopgap. 3x the cores, 2x the RAM of the MacBook, and comparable figures to the Mac Pro, at 1/10 the power draw.
