As a Californian who’s seriously starting to worry about this drought thing… Is this worth it?

“That’s not my bag baby…”

This isn’t going to help much drought-wise unless your tap runs dry and you have to get water from a creek or something.

Now, post-big-quake, that’s another story. I’m thinking about one for my earthquake kit.

Good for pool water if you have a pool.

This town needs an enema!

if the pool has been properly maintained you’d only need to filter it to remove the chlorine… also if you have a pool you can use the powdered/granule pool shock to make standard bleach…

Edit: If I had a pool I would also have a generator that could run the filter system, that would help maintain the water much longer too:)

False:

Can I drink pool water with the LifeStraw?

Pool water contains chlorine and other chemicals. The LifeStraw can only filter out bacteria and parasites, not chemicals.

There is more than chlorine in a pool. There is cyneric acid (stabilizer), algaecides, calcium hypochoride…

There are only chemicals in the pool if you put them in… when was the last time you heard of people getting sick from swallowing pool water, at home, who knows what happens at a public pool…

BUT, like I said, removing the chlorine… the filter used for that would remove other chemicals too. It turns out that Crypto and Giardia resist chlorine anyway, so you’d you’d need to filter the chemicals and then boil it at the very least or use this filter…

When was the last time you heard of people starting to drink from their pool daily as their only source of drinking water?

I don’t recall that time.

(1) if you’re using the standard pool cleaning kit, it will contain a lot more than chlorine.
(2) no, people don’t get sick from drinking a little water from their home or public pools but that’s not what we’re talking about. We’re talking about using it as a regular water source during an emergency which means drinking a lot of it.

I have a saltwater pool, that should be safe…
Only ingredients are water & salt.

I use the lifestraw personal when hiking, but that is because weight matters. I know plenty of serious backpackers and campers who use this for VERY remote long-term camping.

This is a great filter and would be good for a novice to filter water in an emergency situation. It’s set up simply so villagers can use it, not complicated at all. It is bulky so it wouldn’t be great for backpacking (though it would work). Remember hollow membrane filters like this DO NOT typically filter out any chemicals (chlorine, gasoline, pesticides, etc) and neither do most filters (charcoal filters help with this) but this one will filter out parasites, debri, some viruses, etc.
at this price I would recommend it!

Does anyone here know the storage/shelf life for these units? I’m thinking of getting one or more for my FLA HURCON kit, but I’d like to know if I can still depend on it if we have several years without a “big blow.” Thanks.

If your water gets cut off, do you have easy access to a reasonably consistent body of water?
Even in the dryest season?
If not and you don’t camp then don’t bother.
