Previous offer:
4/5/13 (2011)

Short version since I’m on my phone: Randy’s description is bang on my notes. This is definitely the lighter, more elegant style of Russian River pinot. And it’s definitely RRV. At this price it’s a buy if you like that style.

I’ll be back with more tomorrow.

Definitely a lighter style Pinot Noir, classic Russian River Valley example. Strawberry, cherry, some cranberry tartness, light oak, earthy notes on first open but some floral hints appear after it gets some air. This is a great deal on an easy drinking Pinot from one of my favorite small producers in RRV.

I reviewed this just under a year ago and it wasn’t really the type of PN I had been drinking, so it threw me off. I’m in for one because my palate for PN has changed and at this price it’s an easy decision to revisit.

Hello Wooters!

Thanks for looking at my 2010 Russian River Valley Pinot Noir lot… This is a special wine. I think we’re some of the only folks out there growing, producing and bottling 12% alcohol Pinot Noir… No, we’re not in France, this is an elegant approach to an elegant variety… Please be patient with this young beauty. I’m enjoying right now at my house our 2005 and 2006 Pinot Noirs. With 2 years in bottle, this estate wine will shine in a few years, however decanting for three to four hours will help this wine unwind to reveal purfumy red fruit, spicy mint and wintergreen.

This is not fruit-bomb Pinot.

This is a lighter-bodied, claret style red with a ton of floral aromas and a wonderful holiday spice theme.

I’m looking forward to engaging any questions about this wine. Cheers!!!

Disclosure: I was slightly congested while enjoying this wine.

PnP: Light color density, typical of a true Pinot made in a Burgundian style. This is a VERY aromatic wine. (I opened this bottle halfway through a football game and my friends a few seats away were asking what that lovely bouquet was!) Aromas of cherry, raspberry and a touch of caramel. The cherry aroma is almost maraschino-like. The palate is bright with tart cherry, raspberry and a bit of strawberry. Tannin is light and it’s missing the bitter finish some young pinot’s have (No complaint there :)). The mouthfeel is slightly viscous which is surprising considering the tart acidity.

1 Hour in: After opening up, the mouth-feel is now thinner/balanced and the fruit is even brighter. There is some forest floor coming through on the nose and palate. As well as additional nuances to the boquet. In my experience, the funk is usually present in the PnP and gradually diminishes; this wine is the opposite!

Overall, I really enjoyed this wine, especially after it opened up! I guessed the value at $35/bottle so at <$20, this is a great offer. It’s drinking great now but I’m excited to see how it develops.

Good morning Randy.
You’ve already got some good reviews from known and trusted wooters here, but I’m hoping you can add a bit with some additional details over the 12% AbV given; you have pH and TA handy?

You mention you’re now drinking the '05~06. Based on your experience and for those that like bottles with some age, when do you think these will really start singing; '20~25?
Thanks

Can you compare to the 2011 that I bought in the April offering? Sounds similar, and I really enjoy that.

I apologize if this is not the correct format to ask this question, but is Woot available to Georgia yet? If not, will the winery consider matching Woot deal direct? Again, if this is out of order I apologize, but I am very interested in this deal!

Not yet, sorry.

Wine.Woot is currently not able to offer wine deals in certain states, but will be opening up additional states as laws and regulations regarding selling wine online continue to evolve.

You’re welcome to also check out this thread to discuss and talk about current Wine Shipping Laws

Hi,

The 2010 is different is some aspects and similar in others. Both wines clock in at a mere 12.0% alc which is probably the lowest alc in California for Pinot Noirs, so the mouthfeel, color and body are much lighter than the syrah-like Pinots that are mainstream in CA. The 2010 differs from the 2011 in that the 2010 is much more cellar-worthy. The 2010 NEEDS still a few years in bottle. Mother Nature mixed it up on us in 2010 offering very cold summer nights which helped retain the natural acidity, so the 2010 has a spice to it that wasn’t found in the 2011’s. The 2010 has much more berry in in it. There’s this wild mint/wintergreen component in the 2010. I’d say the 2010 is more austere. The blend comes from the same 4 vineyards that we farm in the local RRV. It’s def different from probably any pinot noir you’ve tasted from CA. I am passionate about low alc Pinot Noirs… For the price point offered here on woot, I’d get some!

Cheers and thanks for check us out!

Randy

Hi,

Thanks. Try and be patient with this wine. A few years would benefit this wine. We are not making ready-to-drink Pinot Noir, or zins for that matter. One of the benefits to world-class vino is it needs 3, 5, 7 years in bottle allowing tiny bits of oxygen to seep thru the cork, slowly unwinding the wines… In CA, there’s much more of a push towards the immediate gratification style, what the pro reviewers call, “restaurant ready”, which is a euphemism for cocktail. I’d decant for three hours if opened before 2015.

Cheers!

Randy

A nice 3 minute video from Harvest Moon on the pouring and tasting of this wine. If you are on the fence it’s worth a look:

The ph is low… 3.25 and the TA is naturally high 3.67. When one picks pinot at 21 brix, they capture fresh floral aromas and wound-up yet juicy finish. The 2010 is a candidate for medium term aging. It’s very light in body and color but packs a punch. I’d drink this wine in 2015 forward or decant int room temp decanter and monitor. The tightness will melt away within a few hours in the dcanter or being opened and reveal a really intense red floral and perfume.

For those who are tired of drinking tired pinot noir, this wine is for you.

Thanks for posting the youtube. I tasted that nearly 2 years ago and it still applies!

Cheers.

Hey fellow wooters, back for more here! Last week a strange rectangular prism found its way onto my desk. Learning from my coworkers that a monkey had climbed down from the ceiling explained it and made me that much more curious. On opening I was delighted to see a bottle of 2010 Harvest Moon Pinot Noir.

Three tasters this time around - me, molarchae, and my mom. My PN tastes tend to veer more toward Sonoma Coast (and, as I’m learning, Sta Rita Hills) and Burgundy than RRV. Molarchae actually tends to prefer the sweetness you often get in RRV and my mom seems to prefer the “restaurant ready” style Randy mentioned. First glass, essentially pop’n’pour:
Me: Slightly cloudy, bright purple with a bit of a fade to orange on the rim. Nice. Nose is what I call “cola”, which is that Russian River Valley thing - the sweet, fruity, cherry, even candied nose. There was also a hint of mushroom, and now that Randy mentioned it, yes it’s very floral - but the deeply perfumed kind rather than light hints of flower. Palate was surprisingly juicy, being familiar with (and a fan of) Randy’s Zins. No significant tannin and a nice underlying earthiness. I thought raspberry was the dominant flavour at this point along with a spice that I’m going to call clove. Finish was medium.

Molarchae: cherry and other red fruit. “Dryer” than her general expectations for Pinot (which I guess are tanning), and very drinkable. Her first tasting note was “tasty”.

Mom: Fruity, blackberry nose. Light colour, body, and everything, with a clean finish.

Second glass, 40-50 minutes later, no decant, just air in bottle. I didn’t detect a whole lot of change while the others both said it got more mellow while increasing in apparent body and flavour intensity.

Last glass, about 2 hours after opening. I thought it veered more toward black cherry and even plum at that point. The earthiness came out as well. I agree with Randy this may just need more time in the bottle for the candied character to die down and integrate more with the rest of the wine.

If I had space this would be a no-brainer at this price to lay down for 2-3 years and revisit. As it is, I’ll think on it. Regardless, I’m hoping to make it back to H.M. for barrel tasting weekend. We had a blast there with Randy last year tasting his old Zins and hope to do it again! Speaking of which…any chance we’ll get a Zin offer?

Thanks for joining us today Randy!

Harvest Moon was one of the first Sonoma county wineries I ever visited many (harvest) moons ago in the early days of my wine journey… Solid juice, good people and a lovely spot in the Russian River AVA.
