LifeSmart 1500W Quartz Infrared Heater

This is not an infrared heater (except for the tiny bit of infrared which gets out of the window). This has a fan and blows hot air so it is a predominantly a convection heater. All room heaters give off SOME infrared and all give off SOME convective heat. Infrared heat is conveyed by light waves which you can’t see. There has to be a direct line-of-sight between the heater and the heated. Neither type adds or removes water or oxygen from the air. It’s funny that they brag that the “Infrared heating elements are non-combustible”. Yes quartz and tungsten are non-combustible. If they weren’t, how long would this last? A minute at most. The “fire r etardant plastic” cabinet will burn if it gets hot enough and will give off a lot of toxic smoke.

One BTU equals 0.293071 watt hour, so approx 5000 BTU/hour.

Here’s the 4 element heater on Amazon:

Woot thinks r etardant is a bad word and changed it to something else. Good thing we aren’t discussing ignition timing.

I get frustrated with Woot. You should always post the model number of the actual product you are selling. And are the photos correct? I noticed the control layout is much different between the black and wood styles.

Hmmmmm. If you had a power outage because of “Sandy”,what it the ++++ did you plug it into???

NO doubt a generator.

1 KWH = 3412 BTUs so 1500 watts = 5118 BTUs.

The only reason why I would consider this is, “will it save me money?”. I believe electricity is costlier than gas (I have a gas furnace), so how can this heater save me money? Also, if this is used extensively, and my furnace remains off (the heater will be in the same room), what about the problem of water pipes freezing?

correction: heater will be in same room as the thermostat.

Same as ANY 1500 watt heater!

I bought one of these a few weeks ago. I love it. The outside shell does stay cool. And the heat that comes off is very nice. My house is an open floor plan, so it not as effective as it could be. But, it still does its job well.

It’s not the most attractive looking heater, but I would recommend it.

Oh, just be careful when you take it out of the box. The styrofoam that surrounds it builds up a nice charge on the metal heater. I saw litte heaters going around my head.

How would something like this compare to either this: http://www.amazon.com/Lasko-751320-Ceramic-Heater-Control/dp/B000TTSXNI/ref=pd_sim_hg_1

or this: http://www.amazon.com/Lasko-755320-Ceramic-Digital-Display/dp/B000TTV2QS/ref=pd_bxgy_hg_text_z

It seems that it really doesn’t matter what you get because 1500 watts is 1500 watts. What advantages does the Woot product have other others?

And to be more specific, if I have a fairly open area to heat (approximately 1,000sqft), what product would you recommend?

I have 2 of these already or I would get one.
This price is $20.00 better than I have seen anywhere and the shipping is $10.00 to $20.00 less to boot.

it looks like woot had these refurbished for $59 awhile ago

wanting to get something for my little guys’ room, so I like the thought of it staying cool. Would just use it for brief spans to heat their room up before they go to bed. I live in a pre-war brick townhouse, so naturally the heating upstairs blows and plenty of cold air gets in, well, everywhere. My question: could this suffice? Putting aside the fact that this company’s marketing is quite audacious, and the physics makes no sense, is it still capable?

I am not trying to save money, necessarily, I could run the thermostat up to 80 running full-time for 24hr and still not get their room heated (bad internal ventilation) so I need to do something.

Thanks wooters.

  1. The circuit breaker it will be on is probably 15 amps. This thing uses 12.5 amps. Are you using 2.5 amps or less on the circuit?

  2. IMO one of those oil filled radiator types with a thermostat they sell in the home store for $70 or so is still better.

  3. I believe is has a possibly noisy fan in it. The thing about the radiator type electric heaters is they are quiet with no moving parts.

  4. If you want to do it right, hire an electrician to put a 230V baseboard heater in.

Got one last time woot offered it .LOVE MINE.

I bought one last year, and now it doesn’t work at all. What is the warranty on these things? Saw it online this morning, and was ready to pull the trigger on buying another but they are sold out. I figure spending $99 to heat per year isn’t bad even if I have to replace it. This year we are in a different home, and will not need to run it as often.

I am into my second season with this heater. I am so pleased with it that I cam back for a second one. I am disappointed to see that there aren’t any available on Woot.
