I wonder why this woman is pointing at and smiling at this product? What hidden uses are there for this item?
She’s touching the touch screen to refocus the image after she already took a picture. She’s smiling because this is pretty amazing as it’s the first time this has been able to be done with an instant shutter light field, non-focusing, camera.
Isn’t this pretty much what the Google Camera app does with lens blur and depth mapping?
Woot must have a ton of these in stock. I so much want a practical light-field camera, but this isn’t it.
Oh well. The technology will get there in a couple years, I’m sure.

The Lytro technology came first and is superior. The Google technology very cleverly achieves some of what the Lytro technology is capable of, but can’t replicate it exactly. Waving a single camera lens around a little doesn’t quite replicate the 3D capability of the Lytro lens array.
That said, I still think this price is too much for the Lytro given its specs and how niche it is right now. I’d probably prefer to play with the cheap imitation of it that would come with a phone.
with the little baby sensor, this would seem to be only ideal for macro shots…

Completely irrelevant spec because the Lytro sensor is not the same as most cameras so it cannot be directly compared.
The 16 megapixels in the “Light Field Sensor” are there to oversample in order to derive the 3D data, which is output at a far lower pixel count.
If you look at the specifications for this product on the Woot page the output is 1080 x 1080 pixels. That is all you get: Almost but not quite 1.2 megapixels of the 2D equivalent of other cameras.
That is why this camera is such a compromise. You trade off almost everything that makes up a quality photo, including resolution, just for the one gimmick of being able to choose a different focus point, which no one will ever be able to manipulate in their low-res print or 2D flattened JPG on a web page.
For you to “play” with the focus you must use the proprietary software application, and for anyone else to be able to enjoy them that way you must publish/embed images from Lytro’s web site using their Lytro Player.
Their newer camera, the Lytro Illum, is a much more practical camera with 2450 x 1634 output (a whopping 4 megapixels) from a larger, more conventional body and lens. But it costs $1599.

Ordered my Lytro last Thursday. Somehow Woot with all its cutesy slogans and promise can’t tell me when it will ship. I do realize that Woot is a virtual assemblage of multiple sellers but when asking for a status I expected that they could provide one, rather than the “wait and see” suggestion I received by email. Seems as though they don’t have the ability to track merchandise they sell and have little or no connection to the seller. Perhaps I’m not as much of a risk taker as I should be, but Amazon this is not…
