M-Audio Recording Studio Equipment

Got mine today… never got a shipping notification, it just showed up in the mail room. Again, I am blessed to work two miles south of the Fortress of Wootitude.

I didn’t get my usual shipment of North Dallas air, as Woot just slapped a shipping label on the box it came in, threw a piece of tape across the handle, and threw it in the back of the Fed Ex truck. Despite that, it arrived in goos shape.

Now for the problem… my PC doesn’t have a DVD drive, but the driver disk that came with it has the software packaged on a DVD-ROM. But I did some poking around, and found a very lightweight program that supports MIDI input. It’s called MidiPiano, and it comes as a simple .zip file – no Windows installation, just extract it and run the .exe. All it has is piano sounds (at least, I can’t get anything else to map to the MIDI input), but at least I know the keyboard works.

Yeah, Robert…that was the great thing about this keyboard, it was supposed to work right out of the box without installing drivers and not dealing with sound card latency frustrations.

(As for the DVD issue… You need to extract the iso file (using another cpu with a DVD drive) and transfer it to your cpu via a flash drive, etc…and then extract it and try and install it.) This may be illegal, I don’t know, but you did purchase the software rightfully.

May work, maybe not. Worth a try though as it seems to me, the studio software is big part of the prize here.

This is always an option that could, maybe, allow you to bypass the DVD problem, and if you’re lucky, hopefully you won’t need the disk in the drive to use the software.

Shipping was absolutely terrible. How can an established company not know that electronics should never be shipped in regular product boxing? That’s a cheap move. Boxes are not that expensive woot! Neither is packing material! Even if you have to buy 100,000 of them. They might as well just have sent the keyboard with no boxing at all as the only thing in it to protect it was a piece of cardboard maybe a centimeter in width.

F___k!!! I hope mine can make the trip without any damage. That’s f___k’d up. Now I am really glad I will be home to receive it.

No f__king shipping box??? Damn.

Does it work?? Have you checked it out yet?

That’s a brilliant idea, and it should work fine! The manual notes that one of the USB hardware devices also work as copy-protection dongles – if they’re not connected, the software won’t work. So it’s not at all illegal – the software is useless without the specific hardware.

Apparently, copy protection is a big deal to this company. When I looked at their website to see if they had any free downloads, I instead saw professional-level software at a professional-level price – $150 to $300 bucks. Ouch.

They try hard to keep the cost of their hardware / software combos up - but its not too bad since Pro Tools is pretty much the software to use for professional recording.

I got mine today, poorly packed…well not packed at all. The keystudio came in the retail box with a sticker on it.

Worst part…it doesnt even work :X…it makes screeching noises when i press any key.

I don’t know what happens to some of you guys. Mine came today perfectly packed in what seems to be new condition. I’ve never had a bad experience with Woot.

Mine showed up without a scratch. Though I haven’t check it to see if it works .

Just now got mine. Box was in perfect condition, not a blemish at all. Keyboard looks magnificent!!! Been waiting all friggin day for this!!

There is an updated driver for the Micro Usb. It was apparently released today, the 14th. this might help solve any problems.

So un-happy with this POS. Cannot for the life of me get the thing to change from playing piano. The software that comes with is sucks…I’m missing the USB thing that was to come with it… Sent email to customer support and they asked if it was “tampered” with in shipping. How the heck should I know, the box was open on one end because it was crappy packing is all I can tell. $65+ bucks down the drain.

was there supposed to be software that came with this product like an install cd. All i got was the keyboard and 2 usb cables. can someone help?

Was the box open or damaged? You should have also received the micro audio adapter and a studio software installation dvd.

Of course Woot didn’t ship them in a secured shipping box. Any mishandling by Fedex would have easily caused this problem for many of us. That’s 5 dollar shipping for ya.
These could be warranty items, but who knows?

I would contact M-Audio, before Woot, Fedex.

You shouldn’t have to pay again for these items. Thats bull.

re: M-AUDIO | KeyStudio 49
For any mac users: the manual and box say that the Micro USB interface is not compatible with macs and that Apple Hardware does not need the Micro USB adapter. This may be true but just in case anyone is having issues with the mac sound harware there are drivers for the USB adapter on the m-audio support site for Apple Computers and Mac OS X. Check out

for Snow Leopard.

Hope that was helpful. I got my keyboard and it came with out a scratch and with all of the listed cables/dvd/micro interface. Works perfectly, but I’m sorry for those of you that have had issues. I would say for those of you that received incomplete packages with boxes that look damaged, take a picture of the package as you received it, including any holes/tears/openings then a picture of the parts items that came in the box. Contact m-audio, then woot, then fedex if necessary. There is no reason that a refund would not be offered for return of incomplete hardware. And if you paid with a credit card you may be able to get a refund from them if no one else will offer it.

I should have looked at the shipping label to see if the boxes were sent from Woot’s Secret Lair, or if they were drop-kicked, erm, drop-shipped from the manufacturer. But keep in mind that neither the software disc nor the “micro audio adapter” are actually required… though obviously, they should have made it.

Mine works just fine with the freeware MIDI player and my crappy PC’s sound card. The only keyboards in this price range that I’ve seen at Wal-Mart or Target have Sponge Bob on them, and that’s a song I’ve heard more than enough. For my needs – practicing church choir and the kid’s middle school trombone – it’s a Good Woot.

Got the tough luck, we’re not going to help you email… So I wondered what the BBB thought…look for yourself:
