Ignoring the math for a moment, just remember that there’s a solid chance you will get a 6th gen i5, a 1366x768 display, 8GB of RAM, and a 256GB SSD. And not a pristine refurb, but a scratch and dent. For $180. Ask yourself: would I buy that laptop for $180?

I know people like to badmouth Newegg – and believe me, I understand – but they have a good selection of used laptops and good filters to drill down to specifics. Here’s a batch of laptops that are in the $100-$200 range and meet or exceed the minimum specs listed here, with a minimum of 1080p displays. Even if you don’t buy from them, this should give you an idea of what you can get in this price range without having to resort to gambling.

Why are we throwing in every possible laptop to a random chance? Sell the laptops based on their specs. Yeah, that’s a lot of work creating separate sales on Woot for each, but at least you won’t be paying $180 for a laptop like @chiasticslide mentioned. That’s absurd.

Maybe you could do it on a points system.

  • Windows 11 capable? +1 points.
  • Full HD screen? +1 points.
  • SSD? +1 points.
  • Near perfect condition? +1 points.
  • i5 processor? +1 points. i7? +2 points.

Then you could buy laptops based on the points. 0 points = $69. 1 point = $79. 2 points = $99. 3 points = $129. 4 points = $149. 5 points = $199.

Love this idea! But it will never happen because as you said, it’s too much work. Woot can’t get many simple listings correct anymore and they rely on the community to do its own research and find the mistakes.

By making it a mystery deal they absolve themselves of any responsibility of actually having to get any details correct except for the most minimal necessary. Pretty soon we’ll be seeing mystery Amazon device deals since they can’t seem to ship out the right models.

Remember, need 8th Gen or newer Intel chips to support Windows 11 https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000087875/processors.html#:~:text=All%20Intel®%20Core™,and%20higher%20support%20Windows%2011*.

Their percent of newer chips is kind of small so seems less likely to support Windows 11 and Windows 10 will reach end of support on October 14, 2025

Let’s ignore the math some more!

These two statements either contradict one another or complement each other…

  • Intel Core i5-6300U CPU or newer - 50% of customers will receive an i7; 25% of customers will receive an i5 8th gen or newer.
  • Genuine Windows 10 Pro 64-Bit OS - most will support Windows 11

The base spec of an i5 6th gen does not officially support Windows 11.
You need a minimum Intel 8th gen to support Windows 11.

Only “25% of customers will receive an i5 8th gen or newer”, implying that the rest of the machines will be less than an i5 8th gen and thus not support Windows 11. So that can mean only 25% of buyers will have a machine that supports Windows 11.

Then we have, “most will support Windows 11”. The word “most” implies “the majority”. And “the majority” usually implies over 50%. So this should mean that over 50% of buyers will have a machine that supports Windows 11.

So it is contradictory if only one of those two statements is true.

HOWEVER! If both statements are true, then we can go ahead and ignore some more math with the following assumptions.

The rest of the buyers who did not get an i5 8th gen or newer will make up the other 75%.
Of this 75%, some will get an i7! Some of those i7’s will have to be 8th gen or newer to satisfy the second statement. So this should mean that of the 50% who got an i7, over half of them from this group should have an i7 8th gen or newer to satisfy the other over 25% needed to make the second statement true.

And if you are still reading this, all the above makes no sense when there are i3’s and AMD machines thrown in there… because an i3 7th gen is technically newer than an i5 6th gen.

Ignoring even more math…
There might be a better bargain in buying $180 worth of Powerball tickets instead at this time.

Aren’t these the same 13" laptops that were $250 last week? I’d wait till next week and save another $75.

For those who care, I have Windows 11 working on a 7th gen Core i5 laptop (purchased from Woot a long time ago) since pretty much the introduction of Windows 11. Other than not being “officially” supported, it works fine. This does not guarantee it will work in the future.

If I were to purchase and receive a unit that does not support windows 11, can I return?

Definitely do not buy one of these.

Just wait for a good deal on Slickdeals for dellrefurbished.com. I got a really great laptop for under 200 with an onboard GPU. Reviews of refurb units from that site are generally pretty positive, as it is (I think) all decommissioned FedEx business laptops.

What I got:

Dell Precision 7520 Notebook, 15.6-in FHD (1920 x 1080), No Webcam, 1x Intel Core i7 Quad (i7-6820HQ) 2.70 GHz, 32 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD, No Optical, Nvidia Quadro M2200 (4 GB), Backlit Keyboard, Windows 10 Professional

Total with shipping & Tax: $211.77

ETA: I see all the clicks on the link, but don’t check that site direct, check slickdeals for a coupon. They often have significant discounts via coupons. My deal I want to say was 50% off, IIRC, but they usually are more like 30-40% off.

Per Windows Insider, the next major release (24H2) will not work with pre Gen8. They’re apparently enabling compile settings to generate code with native Gen8 instructions. That may break not only pre-Gen8 systems, but also potentially VMs as well.

TL;DR: Make a backup before attempting 24H2 if you’re on an “officially unsupported” system.

You will get a 128 eMMC laptop.
