I bought two open boxed. Never heard of this company but the professional installers liked the units. Other than no Sirius XM they are sweet.
Goes for $109 on Amazon so a decent discount.
However, there are two separate listings on mothership for the same model. The listing linked below has significantly less glowing reviews.
I was reading reviews on the link you posted (just the few that are listed on the page) and saw 3 that mention “Pioneer”. Not sure how much to trust it.
How does one determine fit? Is there a model compatibility chart?
How is it mounted? Is it for a specific vehicle?
Was wondering the same thing. My wIfe just got a 2013 Highlander, and the one in there is very dated. Did some web searching, and her’s has a 6.1" screen. Look up your vehicle specs to find out. If your current one is bigger, you can probably get an adapter, but smaller will be a problem.
Look at the pictures, appears to mount very similarly to a car stereo.
Says its a 2 din, so likely just mounts like any other double din radio.
Exactly. DIN is a standard for auto audio systems. If your vehicle specs say it can accept a 2 DIN unit, then this will fit.
It is a “double DIN”. You almost always have to get an adapter kit for your specific vehicle to address the trim around it. Just look for ones that list your year & model and accommodate double DIN decks. Single-DIN vs Double-DIN car stereos (crutchfield.com)
Yup! In addition, many of the reviews are super generic adding to my suspicions.
The real bummer is buying this five days ago and paying ten dollars more
Although Woot doesn’t have an official price matching policy, if it’s only been 5 days, it doesn’t hurt to write into CS and ask anyway.
(Note that I am not staff. I just volunteer to help out on the forums.)
I’m in for one just because it has a cd/dvd player. I feel like most of these that go on sale (at a reasonable price) don’t include that feature. I still like to listen to cd’s, cassettes, and Vinyl. Although, I seem to do a lot of streaming nowadays. I have a feeling this deal could come back around again (unless it sells out). I may buy the added insurance for this depending on how much it is ? It does look like the pioneer and nakamichi reviews could be intertwined on some sites or its the same unit thats just been rebranded. There are also some youtube videos on this Nakamichi. Kind of weird to think it doesn’t have a cassette deck since that’s what Nakamichi was mainly known for. But that began in the 70’s and ended in the early 90’s.
I got this for my car when it was offered 2ish months ago.
My main use was to add Apple CarPlay to a 24 year old car & for that purpose it’s pretty good for the price. With that being said, there are some annoyances…
Not having a volume knob/buttons is kinda annoying. There is a capacitive area for volume control, but I’ve gone to change the volume & touched the screen on accident a couple times. It also will not “remember” any volume settings. On one hand, I’ll never be blasted with volume if I was listening to it loudly when I shut the car off, but on the other hand - phone audio always starts off SO LOW it’s impossible to hear anyone so I have to turn the phone volume (different from music volume) up at the start of every first call after the car is started.
For the $90 I paid, I’m still pretty pleased - for the $300 MSRP I would be a bit more upset.
Oddly enough the no volume knob is exactly why I bought this one lol. The dashboard DIN adapter on my Hyundai is like 1.5" inset because why not, and it’s a pain to use a knob xD.
Everyone just be wary - this is a cheap headunit to start. Nakamichi was bought out a while back by a holding company that’s slapping their name on cheap products and feeding on nostalgia / brand recognition.
It’ll work, but don’t expect quality better than any of the other cheap brands that make similar units (Boss, Planet Audio, that ilk).
Just a heads-up, mine came in today in a box that’s about 4 inches too large for it in each direction, and it had NO PACKING MATERIAL in the box to keep it from bouncing around. It WAS in it’s original, unopened box, which has a bit of foam inside that to keep it safe, so I hope it actually works when I take it out and hook it up, but it bounced around from Florida all the way to Illinois so I think my concern is well-warranted. SOMEONE needs to do better. Worst packing/shipping job I have ever seen.
