Philips 47” 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV
I want proof of this…I think you might be full of dung.
Try it your self. I used to suspect that many makers of “120Hz” sets where fibbing. so I went to the back of the store I work at and hooked up a bluray with a motion test and ran it to every tv on display at the same time. I still use the demo with customers, it cut thorough all of the bs and boring explanations. Your eyes don’t lie. Toshiba’s “240” set looked worse than many 60Hz lcds. I did not want that to be true since I make good money on toshibas, but the proof was in the pudding. to quote warren buffet “you can’t tell who’s swimming naked until the tide goes out”. I am now very passionate about “120Hz” and “240HZ” ratings, because I felt lied to by several major brands.
Don’t get it, it is based on an LG 47" screen, except the Phillips does not have the same 120hz tech. I sell these for a living and I have seen a motion test run on these side by side, go find yourself a 47lh40. It is disco now so the price has dropped, it will come with 12 month warranty and it will smoke this Phillips in every conceivable category.
It still seems that the price difference makes up for lack of high end 120hz technology. Considering my less then extensive research, I couldn’t find an LG under $900 at that size. The woot price seems to win again?

Actually, I agree. I like woot!; I just wanted people to buy this TV for the right reasons. What can I say? I’m a TV nerd. For the money, this is pretty hard to beat.

I’m an old man and I don’t understand TVs anymore. Does 120Hz mean it does 3D because it can refresh at 60Hz for each orientation of polarization?
No, 120Hz just means that the picture current running to the TV is twice as fast, producing a smoother image. 3D TVs aren’t based on the processor, it’s just a different type of tv.

I owned this tv for 2 years.

Actually I bought this at costco for twice the price about two years ago. It still works great and my friends love coming over to watch sports and movies.

I’d recommend it again.

Just checked walmart they have these in stock(at my store) I’m going to check them out before I buy.
120Hz is supposed to mean that the TV actually creates 60 “new” frames of content every second. This makes the picture look smoother. By comparison your old tube TV was about 300Hz. but only based on 30pics per sec. this 120Hz should be 120 separate pics per sec. HOWEVER most manufacturers (like Phillips) do not actually have the ability to do this. If you want real 120Hz Samsung, Sony, LG, and some new Sharps are what you are looking for. These other brands are flashing lights at you so they can put “120Hz” on their features list.
this is an explanation of a non-problem. you are correct in that 120Hz does not display 120 “new” frames every second, but this doesn’t matter one bit. it’s all about the input signal.

movies are filmed at 24 frames per second (24Hz), ntsc (north american television signal) is just under 30fps (60Hz interlaced). a 60Hz monitor has no problem displaying ntsc, but for movies, some image processing has to be done. the most technique is called 2:3 (or 3:2) pulldown, where it interlaces four movie frames together into five display frames, “dirtying” individual frames in the process. at 120Hz, there is no need for this interlacing, as 120 is a common denominator for 24, 30, and 60, and the result is simple frame repetition. however, you’re still limited to the input signal.

what you are correct in is mentioning certain manufacturers’ motion processing techniques, but this has almost nothing to do with refresh rate, as the human eye can’t really distinguish anything higher than 60Hz.

I bought this tv from Walmart and am very disappointed. The picture compared to my 37in Lg is subpar and it is 60hz. It looks nice hooked up to blu ray but it will not work with my Dishnetwork box in digital mode ie. hdmi. It just shuts down if you try to hook it up that way so I have to analog hook it up so the picture is not good at all. he only reason I did not take back was they had to take it out of the box to fit it in my car so I had no box to take it back but I would say run from this and get something better.

Just bought this TV about 3weeks ago. The picture is amazing, much better than some other TV’s I’ve seen. It isn’t fuzzy or blurry, very clear. When you put this tv on the 120hz setting it looks awesome. I watched Terminator Salvation with the 120hz and it moves so fast that it reminds me of the mini-movies they play in video games.

FYI - I do not know much about TV’s and I know all are different even if you buy the same one. However, I’ve had excellent results with this tv. We use Comcast and our HD channels look great and blu rays are great too!!

I bought this (same model, same size) at Sam’s a year ago. They had all the units on the big TV wall playing the same football highlights DVD.

To me, this TV looked better than all of the rest. That may not be much of a technical argument, but I got exactly the picture that I wanted, and I paid almost 2x this price.

Other brands represented on the wall were LG, Samsung, Vizio, Toshiba.

I had the exact same experience. Love this TV.

I just bought this in a previous Woot and it was sent with a non-working remote. I called Philips and they had me test the remote only to reveal that it was defective. Unfortunately the TV cannot be setup without a working remote so I wasn’t able to use it. I was told to email Philips the receipt from Woot so that they could send me another remote. I did so right away and waited for them to respond the next day with, “This is not valid enough for Philips to send you a remote. Please login to Woot! and send us a copy of the page from when you purchased the TV.” I did this right away and have still not heard back. I now have a $700 giant paper weight. Philips customer service has definitely disappointed me. There seems to be no sense of urgency for me to have a TV that works!

[MOD: Have you emailed service@woot.com to ask for some assistance/intervention? No promises, but they may be able to help.]
You might be able to purchase a remote on ebay for the TV. I know you shouldn’t have to do that, but it could get things moving a little more quickly for you. Also, if you have tried in good faith to rectify the situation, it might be time for a chargeback.

does the TV have a manufacturer’s warranty?

Of course, since Woot is a deal-a-day site, the actual page from which you ordered the TV no longer exists. And that “customer disservice rep” from Philips deserves to be flogged.

From the item page: “Warranty: 90 Day P&F”

You can also get an extended warranty from SquareTrade (the link is on the item page too).
Has anybody heard or know of how the picture is on this TV? Does it mount to the wall easily?

I just got lucky and got a check for $600 today, and I feel that this woot is a sign to spend it…
I got this model from woot back in January of '09 ($899 + 5 then) and I am very happy with the TV. The only problem that’s surfaced in the last year and a half is the Philips logo is sometimes displayed all garbled up on startup, but that’s it.

I watch live sports and play video games, and this TV is good for both.

I’m sorry, I’m very new at this and I’m not 100% sure what that means and covers
Why would Philips be an automatic no? I have had a number of Philips products over the years that have performed well. Granted, I have never had a Philips TV, but their other products seem ok. Not the best, not the worst.
As have I but ~ 2 years ago, Philips sold the manufacturing, servicing and use-of-name, marketing, etc. for the US to Funai, a Japanese company that has had a crummy rep. for decades.
Having serviced some of their gear, I wouldn’t touch it and the fact that there are enough to offer to the world kind of gives one an additional warning.

Maybe it was a series problem that has been rectified but I would do a thorough search of the ‘help me Mr. techie’ sites before committing.

Other Funai brands:

Funai, Symphonic, Sylvania, Emerson, Aventura, Durabrand, ESA, Magnavox, Insignia, and Misakai

If you buy the TV from Woot, you’ll get a 90-day warranty. If you pay a little more, you can get an extended warranty from SqaureTrade.

As far as what’s covered, I’m ass-uming that manufacturing defects are covered, but not accidents (such has hurling your Wii controller through the screen).

You can read more about SquareTrade
here.

I would think that you could buy a remote from Philips too. Yeah it might be another $20 but I’d rather have a $720 TV than a $700 paperweight.
