Schwinn 131 Upright Exercise Bike

ive owned this same bike (without the fan) for almost a year. i bought it at di@k’s for about the same price if not a little more ($300?). it was worth every penny. it feels just like the bikes at the gym, and is SUPER quiet. its heavy as hell and has excellent build quality. it has to be plugged in to work, which saves batteries. but the best thing is definitely the fly wheel feel to the pedaling. i modified the magazine holder to allow for my laptop… and actual PAGE TURNING functionality for magazines/books. all it took was some pliers to bend the metal back… a silly design flaw

I have the recumbent version of this. It’s solid, quiet and the electronics are great.

hmmmm too country round for this woot :-p

If you go to the product website link in the first post and click the BUY ONLINE button it costs $549 plus $149 shipping!!

Anyone know if a 6’2" person (34" legs) could ride this without hitting the handlebars?

Nothing on their website and only a hint in the reviews on this subject.

I was looking around at some of the reviews on the web and ran across this one I thought I would share:

“This bike is very, very small. If you’re over 6’ buy something else. I’m going to have to send it back or sell it as every time I pedal my knees hit the handlebars. At 6’3 this problem shouldn’t be so dramatic. the bike is also flimsy generally, from the contruction of the body to the poles that support the seat and the handlebars, the bike feels like its about to come apart at any moment.”

Being 6’2 myself I am having second thoughts about this bike.

I’ve been wanting a decent (read not walmart) excercise bike for some time now. This looks to fit my quality standards at the pricepoint I had in mind.

I’m in for one.

Hate to break it to you, but Walmart is probably the largest seller of Schwinn bikes these days. Schwinn went bankrupt and was bought out by a company (which was in turn bought out by another) that makes the bikes, cheaply, in China. Now, as far as the exercise bikes go, I can’t attest to their quality, but Schwinn is more or less a Walmart brand these days.

I saw that review but then i also read this review:

I am 6’2" and previous reviews mentioned the issue with a rider’s height. It was actually a pretty good fit and decided to purchase the bike…You definitely have a lot of room to adjust the unit to fit any size up to 6’2", I believe anyone taller may run into difficulties in setting the correct seat height..

So now i am not sure either (i am 6’2").

(edit) According to Consumers Reports, they estimate that it will fit a person up to 77" tall, so i guess i am in.

If this were an elliptical, I’d be in for one.

For twice the price.

You didn’t break anything to me. I’m well aware Walmart has been selling low-grade Schwinn bicycles for several years now. Walmart also got Mongoose to sell out and start making cheapo bikes in the past as well, this isn’t a new concept for Walmart.

However, I’m clearly talking about Schwinn exercise bikes here, which cannot be purchased at Walmart, and do not carry the stigma of the Walmart-ized Schwinn bicycles. Schwinn exercise equipment is of superior quality compared to any of the equipment I’ve seen in my budget range. For this specific model (which I’ve seen in person) to be sold new for $255 shipped to my front door, I’m ecstatic. It is certainly a good value for my application.

I’m well aware of what I’m getting myself into here. I was born at night, but it wasn’t last night.

Cheers!

I have a recumbent Schwinn exercise bike that I bought a couple years ago on Amazon. My bike was actually made by Nautilus. I had a part that was damaged in shipping and ended up calling the phone number in the manual for a replacement. Their customer service was awesome. Talked to a real person in Oregon, who got the replacement part shipped out to me right away.

The bike itself is a big step above the cheapo exercise bikes you see in a lot of stores. I rode 2 of those $199 Proform bikes to pieces and neither lasted more than a year. I do ride a lot. In the summer I ride a regular bike every day, but when it gets cold and dark in the winter I ride my stationary bike instead, so from about October to April I ride every day for an hour. My Schwinn bike has been going strong for about 2 years now, and it doesn’t appear to be showing any signs of problems yet.

In addition to the great build quality, the bike is really quiet, has enough resistance levels to give me a good workout, and is the only stationary bike I have owned so far that allows enough of a workout to keep me in decent shape through the winter so that when I get back to outside riding in the spring I don’t feel like I’m starting from scratch.

I can’t speak to this specific bike since I own a different model, but as far as Schwinn exercise bikes in general go, when the time eventually does come for me to replace the one I have I will certainly be buying another Schwinn.

I agree with the others, don’t read anything into the Schwinn name–good or bad. Schwinn’s history is a roller coaster of success and failure, and the brand has changed hands several times. Gone are the days of the badass Paramounts and top shelf mountain bikes, yes. The Schwinn bikes you now see in Target or Walmart are simply cheap Chinese bikes with a Schwinn badge glued to them. It’s a shame, but whomever bought the brand decided to go that route, and I bet they sell a lot of bikes. Crappy bikes.

Now from what I can gather, the Schwinn Fitness exercise bikes are of decent quality. Apparently they are part of the Nautilus family, which I hope is a good thing.

Because I just bought one. Cheers everyone.

Does it say anywhere how long it will take to ship??

Fair enough. I’m just saying their name has been sullied so much over the years, I’m wary to buy anything named “Schwinn”. But it does seem that their exercise bikes are of decent quality, so I may have to jump on this myself. Not a bad deal with the shipping included. Not bad at all.

The tall reviewers HERE seem to be happy with the fit. One reviewer thinks improper adjustment is reason some complain it’s too small. I’m in.

We’ve had a Schwinn Airdyne for 15 or more years that is still running (a little rusty)but is noisy as hell and had A Schwinn Recombinant that we liked (it was quiet enough to watch TV while using) until the movers lost some of the parts. Buying this to replace the recumbant (at ~ 150 less) and hope it hold up for a few years.

FEDEX TRACKING

Mine came in today. I don’t have time to unpack it since this is a work day, but the box is a little beat up.

I’ll definitely cross my fingers when opening it, as I’ve read quite a few reviews from folks that received them damaged.

Received mine today. Shipping carton in good condition. Upon opening, no apparent shipping damage. Assembly fairly straightforward. Necessary tools included. However, computer appeared dead. Tested AC adapter with meter, OK. Disassembled front mast twice to insure cable properly connected. Second time with flashlight revealed connection reversed (i.e. no connection). After that, no problem. Pleased so far. Without fan on, absolutely silent operation.
