Have this with two dogs and I definitely notice it helping with general dog odor. I’ve been very happy and 3rd party Amazon filters worked just fine as others mention.
As has been shared, a ton of 3rd party filter replacements fit quite well. There are some that are slightly cheaper, but I like the options available with this listing on Amazon. In my opinion, none of the non-OE carbon prefilters are quite as good, but these ones do okay after the first few days.
For the pet question, if you manage to vacuum the prefilter every once in a while to keep the airflow up, this Winix has enough power to keep the air moving, and the HEPA filter in good condition. Every purifier will have some level of maintenance to keep optimal performance, but this one is engineered fairly well, so I’d say that it is a good option.
We have two of these units currently, and have gifted a couple to family. No pets at this time, but they have done well over the past few years.
I have a great dane, a small dog, a yorkie, and a bird. It works for us.
My faughter has duch severe allergies that she ends up in the hospital. We got one of these for her dorm room, and as long as she doesn’t cover it with a blanket (oh Lordy!)and it works amazingly.

I have a Winix 5500. Going almost constantly for 4 years.
Now that and this one has a Washable Fine Mesh Pre-Filter. Check it often, cause it gets dirty fast. A good rinse and you are good to go.
