I purchased one of these a few months back from Woot, (and paid $30. more for it). These are the final version (2014) of the 8.9HDX tablets and will update to FireOS 5.4.0.1, which is the latest version and does feature Alexis. You can also install the Google Play Store on them simply by sideloading a few files. This is a good tablet with fast response, AC WiFI, and a beautiful display. Get the 32GB version because the 16 does not have enough free memory. Further more, because they are certified by Amazon, they carry a full year warranty.
You might want to read the comments section of prior sales. In summary, more powerful processor, better screen, and a full functioning Android tablet. The current Fire models are lower end readers, with worse screens. This model compares with an iPad, very favorably.
I got one of these one the last sale, paid $30 more, and am very pleased with the purchase. It makes my other Fire look like rubbish. It doesn’t replace my Voyage for general reading, esp outside, due to screen glare. But it’s a very solid tablet.
If money’s an issue, get the current, cheaper model. But of you’re looking for a high quality Android tablet, you won’t be disappointed with this sale. I recommend buying the larger memory model, and get a good case for it.
These are sweet, sweet tablets. They have a really nice form factor and they’re very light for their size, which makes them a great all around choice for daily use. They have bright, colorful screens, fast CPUs and enough RAM to handle heavy browsing. It is true that the older model of HDX is not supported for FireOS upgrades, but the newer model is.
A couple lame things about these: They don’t have card readers. I wouldn’t even touch the 16GB version for this reason. Also, they’re a total PITA to root, if that’s something you want to do. It’s not hard to install the Play Store and get access to Google’s official apps, but FireOS has an idiosyncratic launcher that doesn’t do widgets and some other common Android features, and in some cases common Android settings aren’t available to the end user or don’t work quite right (e.g. my FireOS devices re-prompt me to switch away from my preferred keyboard every time I unlock them). I’d totally be interested in buying if I didn’t already have one.
The HD is not an HDX. The HDX has more RAM, a larger screen and a faster CPU. The HD has a card reader, but IMO not having the extra RAM really hamstrings it as a device.
Aha!!! My big chance to take dump on Amazon for screwing me so bad with these tablets. I purchased 4 new tablets for my children at Christmas time and bought extended warranties. One of the tablets bit the dust after about 6 months and feeling all good about myself buying the warranty, I contacted Amazon for a replacement. They sent me a refurb as a replacement. My fault for not reading the fine print, but okay…I took their refurb replacement and we used it for 3 months before it started doing weird things. I contacted Amazon and they had me do all the silly steps to prove to them that there is nothing I could do to fix it…so they sent me another refurb warranty replacement. Another few months with the “new” tablet and this one too bit the dust. I pitched a fit to Amazon with NO SATISFACTION.
DO NOT BUY REFURBS OF AMAZON FIRE TABLETS…THEY WILL NOT LAST.
Just sold my old iPad2, which I found not that great. Also sold off an Android tablet that was supposed to be great, but wasn’t. It kept telling me it “failed to inject a certificate” and the firmware upgrade process was nuts.
I have TWO Fires, small and medium
size which work well, and am buying this one. I have no desire to hack, crack, drizzle or dizzle it and I do not play games on it.
Agreed, I own every model of Fire, because I am crazy and a (hopefully) recovering hoarder. This is the best buy in a Fire, even better than the newer ones using the plug in memory option (up to 128 K). If I had to throw them all away (thinking about it) and keep only one, this is the keeper.
