This tablet is old, so it’s not Alexa enabled, and can’t be upgraded to be Alexa enabled.

Only 5th and 6th gen Fire tablets can be Alexa enabled.

Woot: I think you have a typo.

“Amazon Fire HD - Jem (2012)”

I am not familiar with the month of Jem–what zodiac sign does it cover?

The Amazon Fire tablet may very well be the worst tablet on the market. They really do not want you to have access to standard apps. Putting Chrome on it is difficult. It doesn’t accept the Xfinity apps nor many apps that every other tablet on the market allows.

Basically, this is a device meant for giving money to Amazon.

Also, the size is very misleading because the screen does not go edge to edge and instead the tablet has a very wide border of about 1.5" on every side.

It’s a bad tablet. Even for as little as they’re asking it’s bad. I absolutely hate mine.

Do these have a SD card slot for expandability??

No.

It’s not a typo; it was the code name for the Amazon OS that was on that tablet. Of course, it’s a code name that only someone who worked on that tablet would recognize, so somewhat useless in this context.

In order:

  1. Amazon tablets are neither the best nor the worst on the market. You simply have to do your homework first. That’s true of any tablet.

  2. Amazon would love to give you access to all of the “standard apps.” However, the terms that Google requires for access to the Google Play store are not acceptable to Amazon. Basically, Google wants a cut of the money and they want access to all of the user’s data, including access to every single user action on the tablet.

  3. 90% of the apps in the Google Play store can be sideloaded onto the Amazon tablet following instructions easily obtainable online. The only ones that won’t work are the ones that interact directly with Google services, most often the Google mapping service. Putting Chrome onto my Amazon tablet wasn’t at all difficult and it took just a few minutes.

  4. The XFinity App is available natively on the Fire tablets.

  5. Yes, this is a tablet for consumption of Amazon content, just as the Samsung tablet is a device for consumption of Google content, just as the Apple tablet is a device for consumption of Apple content.

  6. The screen size is not misleading, as the 8.9" measure doesn’t refer to the size of the tablet; it refers to the size of the screen itself.

All that said, this isn’t a tablet I’d particularly recommend. I’d look around for the Fire HDX 8.9, which is far more powerful, with one of the best screens in the industry.

The LTE models became available in Nov 2012. You can read about various Fire models on Wikipedia Fire HD - Wikipedia.

Thanks for the information.

Woot: Sorry for jumping to a conclusion. I should have googled Jem before posting.

Thanks. This link clarifies things.

Does this model support screen mirroring with a Fire TV stick? I am looking for a Fire tablet I can use for sheet music and could show in a larger size for groups of musicians, and this might just do the trick.

Thanks in advance.

Great response… and very accurate, along with being objective.

A Classic worth owning.

I have had and enjoyed this tablet for years… AND it has the best resolution of any Amazon Fire tablet made. 1920 × 1200 (254 ppi) : that even beats the 6th Generation models. The sound is phenomenal.

And so many apps are available in the Amazon Market, that I seriously doubt you will want to sideload one from GooglePlay, but you have that option (in the settings.)

The only con is the battery life is killed by keeping the WiFi on, so if you want that full 8 hours, you won’t get it with enabled WiFi and a fully bright screen.

Bottom line 4.5 stars out of 5,

I agree that was a thorough response… well written.

I’d like to add that if the Google overlords isn’t a concern, then you can install Google Play (to avoid having to sideload apps) to the Fire tablets by following the directions at this site: http://www.howtogeek.com/232726/how-to-install-the-google-play-store-on-your-amazon-fire-tablet/

Can anyone answer the question about this being upgrade-able to support the new Alexa enabled feature that is on the new tablets?

I just purchased the 6th gen Fire HD tablet. I have 3 Echo devices in my house (now 4 with the tablet) and having Alexa “mobile” with me is very handy. I can give my Alexa commands to do stuff at my house fron anywhere. Really irritates my kids… lol (lights off… TV off… radio on / sound up…) Yes, I could do this without Alexa commands but it’s so much eaiser now using my tablet.

This deal was offered around the holidays, and I ordered the 64b model, that was supposed to come with LTE as well. What I got was an 8GB model with no LTE. When I complained to Woot, they said there were no more and that they could only issue a refund, which they did promptly. Now I see the deal again, and think to myself, did they suddenly find 20 cases in the warehouse? I am disapwooted.

From the Amazon web site: https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=202083830

Alexa runs on Fire OS 5.4

You can use Alexa on your Fire tablet to ask questions, shop, search, play music, and more. Help for Fire (5th Generation), Fire HD 8 (5th Generation), Fire HD 10 (5th Generation), and Fire HD 8 (6th Generation).

Note: Alexa is not available on

  • Fire HD 6 (4th Generation),
  • Fire HD 7 (4th Generation),
  • Fire HDX 8.9 (4th Generation), or previous generation tablets.

The Alexa app from the Amazon Appstore is a companion app for Alexa-enabled devices. If your Fire tablet is not an Alexa-enabled device, it will not support Alexa interactions, even if the Alexa app is downloaded to the device.

Basically, it appears that only 5th amd 6th generation Fire tablets have Alexa Voice Service enabled.

I have refurb from Woot with no Alexa and a newer one with Alexa.

I seldom use Alexa.
