I was very interested until I saw the RAM isnât user upgradable. Only 8GB of RAM is definitely light for Windows.
[TT: Updated to 1 soldered; 1 open slot.]
its a sad day when manufacturers decide user memory is not upgradeable. You are correct in some ways. Windows can run fine on 8gb. The problem is when you add an anti-virus program on top of it, you add word, excel, powerpoint, heaven forbid you put the whole suite on there and do some publishing or database work. Add to that browsing activity with multiple tabs open, accross multiple browsers. At this point you would want to look in to the CPU as well.
This configuration would probably suffice to run windows and open a couple of browsing tabs imho.
If one was to ask me what you need as a minimum, is 12-24 is a good starting point on a PC (to do those things above). Not to be able to upgrade while wanting to âmulti-taskâ, on a 8gb machine, well, like you mention no thank you.
Woot- stay away from these deals, some people donât know these things and see a cheap pc as something that is productive. Now I have bought inexpensive ones from you but the memory can be upgradrable and the CPU can handle it WITHOUT overheating, eventually causing the fan to constantly run.
Maybe a footnote: basic computer, browsing with one or two tabs open, using and not loading it up with resource intensive, running in the background, large programs.
Sorry early in the morning, trying to help someone make a decesion on this.
Thatâs why I stopped buying Lenovos. Had 2 & not upgradeable, but lovely machines.
Recently saw a few newer ones that were. Maybe they learned.
Iâm far from an expert, but when I am browsing, it tends to be the less expensive ones, whether it be Lenovo, HP, or Dell that donât have upgradable RAM.
My 2nd Lenovo was MSRP >$1K with 8 soldered but bought it for $600 on clearance @ BB. Beautiful (4K screen) til the motherboard began to die.
If you paste âHP Elitebook 840 G6â into the G search engine and get to HPâs support page (first result or so), you will find different info:
Memory
Specification | Description |
---|---|
Standard | (2) SODIMMs (customer accessible/upgradeable) |
Supports dual-channel memory | |
Transfer rate up to 2400 MT/s | |
Configurations | 32 GB DDR4-2400 SDRAM (2 x 16 GB) |
16 GB DDR4-2400 SDRAM (1 x 16 GB) | |
16 GB DDR4-2400 SDRAM (2 x 8 GB) | |
8 GB DDR4-2400 SDRAM (1 x 8 GB) | |
8 GB DDR4-2400 SDRAM (2 x 4 GB) | |
4 GB DDR4-2400 SDRAM (1 x 4 GB) | |
Maximum | 32 GB DDR4-2400 SDRAM |
The Woot listing probably says ânot user upgradeableâ because you have to use something slightly more than just a screwdriver to get into the chassis (most likely removing/replacing some rubber feet/strips to access the screws and a spudging tool to separate the body pieces). You might also enter the model into the YT video site search and find easy to follow instructions on opening and upgrading. While youâre in there, swap out the tiny SSD as well.
Am I missing something?

Next. I am fairly sure it has 2 slots and 1 of them is 8GB soldered.
[MOD: cleaned up the URL. Renewed with Amazon warranty. Ours is Factory Reconditioned with an HP warranty.]
And hereâs one with yet a lower price and 16gb installed.

Also, since all 840 G6 share the same chassis/mainboard I doubt very much that any of the ram is soldered.
I just got this same model from a reseller last week (free, for âwinningâ a contest at a tradeshow). I installed Ubuntu linux on it, and it ran well, but wouldnât identify the wireless card. Worked fine plugged into the ethernet card, but thatâs a no-go for for me. I dickered around for a few minutes, but gave up and tried a few other distros and finally Linux Mint immediately found the wireless. If you donât need Windows and are confident installing Mint (lots of help online and itâs quite easy) it makes a decent Linux box. And if youâre coming from Windows, Mint has a very âWindowsâ look and feel to it, moreso than Ubuntu.
I suppose 8 Gb of RAM is plenty for Mint, as long as you donât want more than a few tabs open in Firefox?
So far, so good. But I found a youtube link about adding ram that showed the single stick was not soldered, plus one empty slot, so Iâll probably grab some cheap sticks and upgrade.
MEMORY
Hi all. Vendor just confirmed that this unit has 1 x 8GB stick soldered to the board. Then thereâs one open slot for you to add an additional 8GB for 16GB total.
None of the MacBooks or surface devices have upgradable RAM typically
I think people are being a little bit hyperbolic here, I have a surface pro 7 with 8 gigabytes of RAM and it 10th gen. I can have 20 tabs open without any issue.
Not to mention as someone else pointed out. You can add a stick of ram if you want
No, it clearly states that ONE 8GB is onboard and then there is an open slot to accept 8GB more. Not ideal but 16GB ram for cheap is not bad.
Earlier in the day, the sale said it wasnât upgradable. Weâve updated it.
Thanks! Just bought that one.
More regarding the RAM. I bet the movo will run 32GB so you could probably add 8 + 16 for 24GB. We have hundreds of these at work. Theyâre really good. I MUCH prefer the Lenovo Thinkpads. T4zx though.
Thank you ALL for the info!
Very close to buying and upgrading the RAM, but I have grown to really like a touchscreen on a laptop.
