Quit trippin’, there is no additional cost for any “service” when you purchase this unit, and most GPS units are not that way either.

Oh, I dunno…there is the fact that the vast majority of cars on the road do not have OnStar, and how is using a GPS “lazy” while a map isn’t? Seems to me that, in theory, they both give you directions.
Convenience is not the same as laziness.
I’m a guy, i’d rather wander around lost than ask for directions much less use GPS. Oh well, try again tomorrow night
This is a good w00t - but I am going to pass 'cause I am going to save for one with Topo maps
Nada, zip, zilch, zero. However, I would avoid this one like the plague. The inability to download waypoints is like crack without the pipe.
We just had a good friend found by search and rescue today. This is going to him, talk about woot being a kharmic force. This is the 3rd time we’ve said we should get a product and the next day’s woot is just what we needed. We will have to see if woot offers up a bug sweeper tomorrow… we think they are bugging our house or something!
Can you explain why the inability to download waypoints is so bad? for those of us considering this as our first GPS and will only use casually (for driving, casual hiking, occasional camping etc)
enough with the weird expensive gadgets… bring on the weird not-so-expensive gadgest! and tv’s!
how bout a car for cheap? i’d only buy one, but you can’t beat $5 shipping
you can’t take on star on the AT
I have a GPS and LOVE IT! Great Price. However, I’m confused why is someone telling us that they golfed today? I DON"T CARE! I was working.
Good God, you forgot the duct tape! Stick with a GPS that already has the ability to connect to a PC. Otherwise, we’ll have to elevate you to MEGAGEEK status.
The “service” comes from satellites that are orbiting the earth 24/7. Their signals are free now, always will be. BUT, this GPS has no expansion capacity so you can never get more detail than the basic maps that are pre-loaded.
Was your post simply a ‘first page’ type post? Woot seems to be deleting those.
HERE IS THE HACK. Figures the Russkies would beat the Americans to it.
Seriously, looks like an adventurous and definitely alpha-version hack. Use at your own risk. Here’s a picture of what your unit would look like post-hack:

Here’s another company that’s selling a cable if you decide you don’t want to mess with paper clips, foam, and rubber bands. Now, your unit can look like this:
That said, I agree with other posters - if I have $100 to spend, I’d rather stretch a little farther and buy a unit that has PC access built into it natively.
Okay, so let’s say you aren’t a cacher and you’d just like to use this thing for driving. Still a bad idea. Why? Streets, roads, freeways are changing constantly. This 8 mb map that is inclulded will already be a year out of date even before you turn the darn thing on! So what? You CAN’T upgrade the map unless you use some Macgyver like technique. Magellan is just plain STUPID for releasing this product without connectivity.
Hilarious, thanks for the laugh.
Riiight. Say that again in say 10 years. ![]()
Won’t take 10 years…
This is only 12 dollars more at buyeretail.com
So “Woot’s Savings” don’t justify a buy for me. Pretty tempting though!
When purchasing a GPS unit you buy the unit (with maps already pre-loaded or you download them from your computer with the CD provided—not as hard as it appears–GARMIN sales reps will help you with this) and then you attach the GPS unit to your cigarette lighter in the car. YOU DO NOT PAY FOR SERVICE! It’s not like satellite radio.
