Magnavox Progressive Scan DVD Recorder

Is it worth it if my parents are always recording stuff on the VCR?

If I didn’t already have two DVRs (from woot) I’d buy this in a heartbeat.

Anyone reading the “Internet Experts” pontificating on how this is crаp because it’s ONLY 480 resolution – go price a Blu-Ray DVR and see if you can find one for under four figures. And if the analog-only tuner is a deal-breaker, you can go buy the latest greatest marketeeeering gimick – the “tuner-free” DVR for only $300 or thereabouts. Lаme!!!

I am sorry, but upconverters which make the picture far better than 480p are available for around 80 dollars.

You are right, Blu-Ray is expensive, but this is outdated with the advent of the upconverter.

Can you back up wright protected VHS tapes?

Work as a DVR?
As in, “Digital Video Recorder” meaning it records video in digital form on a DVD, yes. As in, like a TiVo, no. Think “VCR that records on DVDs instead of tapes.”

analog tv tuner??? obsolete in 6 months
If you use an antenna to get your TV that is correct. If you have cable, that probably isn’t correct. If you use a cable box or satellite box, you’re not using the built in tuner anyway, so again, the analog TV tuner doesn’t matter.

only 480p ?
That’s the best you can get out of DVD. If you have a crappy TV that does a bad conversion from 480p to 720p/1080i/1080p or whatever your TV displays at, get a good DVD player with HD upconversion. If you have a good TV that does a good conversion, you are just wasting your money. Unless you can tell the difference between a digital connection and an analog one, in which case you probably wouldn’t have asked the question.

Got one of these from Sam’s Club auction site as my first DVD Recorder. It works. That’s about it. Picture quality is blah and ease of use is simple but not easy. It’s a pain. I would advise skipping this.

Anyone know if I can use this to burn dvd’s of whats recorded on my dishnetwork DVR?

Can this be used to copy Video’s to DVD’s? I have a number of video’s and my mom has a bunch she’d love to have on DVD as her VCR doesn’t work anymore. Thanks!!!

Just because it has been “upconverted” doesn’t mean that the picture is any better. If you compare a BluRay picture to an upconverted DVD, hopefully you’ll be able to tell the difference. If you have ever switched between an HD broadcast and an analog broadcast, you will see similar results. The picture on most TV’s has to be “upconverted” or “downconverted” to display at all. All you are doing when buying a “upconverting” DVD player is shifting the “upconversion” job from the TV to the DVD player.

Magnavox, they’re still around? I don’t think I’ve seen a Magnavox anything since the TV at my friend’s house in the late 1970s with the tuning-fork ultrasonic remote.

If I’m currently using a VCR, 480 is a substantial improvement. Plus the Simpsons look just dandy until I wipe the RW and use it again the next day…

I did not say it was as good as the blue-ray, but it is better than the woot on now.

If you have a >480 TV it already HAS an upconverter built-in.

If you have a >480 TV that is smaller than, oh, 42" or thereabouts you really won’t see much more than you’ll see with NTSC (unless you are hunched up close to the TV as if it were a computer monitor).

Hype Uber Alles and all that aside, a good DVD – standard def – with S-Video (makes a HUGE difference over Composite) – into a good “standard def” TV will knock your socks off.

I got this for my mother in law and she loves it! She still doesn’t know how to use it yet and is still using VHS tapes to record Matlock but one day she’ll figure it out.

You folks who will waste your money buying an up-converting DVD player (“Has 1080 P output”)…Isn’t your TV already equipped with an upconvertor? I mean what do YOU think happens between the RCA (or S-Video) input jack and the screen???

Dare we say, “Funai?”

As far as I can tell, they’re just rebadged Funai crap these days.
I’ve had 2 DVD/VCRs manufactured by Funai (1 Emerson, 1 Magnavox), and I don’t believe either one lasted much more than a year.
1 started eating tapes, the other one just died completely.

i have a tv that upconverts to 720p, so that means the dvd recorder will record at 480p but when played through the tv it will be in 720p due to the upconverter from the tv?

Thanks!

Did they teleport that from the 1980s?? That is one ugly DVD player.

How about converting VHS to DVD with this?
